Let’s talk worldtimers

Apologies if there has been a post on this already but I’ve been wanting a worldtimer for a while now but can’t decide on one.   Being from Melbourne Australia, I hate that no watch actually shows Melbourne instead of Sydney but it is what it is.  I was hoping people could share me their world timers and their experience with them to help me decide.  if you know of any world timers that shows Melbourne instead of Sydney please do tell!

thanks for Sharing your stories

Omega aqua terra worldtimer. but Sydney instead of Melbourne. The most beautiful dial on a world timer, and the watch is accurate and easily available in the online boutique or stores. Very reasonable price.

It's a truly awesome watch.  Comparable Worldtimers cost something like 3x what the Omega Worldtimer costs.  Laser-ablated dial!

I loved it!  Unfortunately, I sold it on, because I was an idiot.  It never fit right on my wrist.  And I realize now that that was the case because Swiss bracelets never sit right on my wrist.  If I had gotten it with rubber strap, that watch would still command pride of place in my collection.

Just look at it!

Yes mine is on a bracelet, and for me the bottom links near the clasp don’t sit right, the boutique also looked at it and suggested I try the strap. But I am not going to spend $500 on a rubber strap. I have identified a good leather strap for 1/2 the price of omega rubber. Made by daluca straps.

how Do you find the watch? It’s such a beautiful watch.  Is the worldtimer easy to use?

I love the watch, but to honest, the type font of the cities is quite small, though really well rendered. Rado is pretty well known for their use of ceramic. But i'll admit it's easier to ask Siri what time it is in Mauritius. But even after all that it's my favorite watch complication. My 'grail" is the JLC Master Geographic.

If you want a beautifully rendered world map, may I recommend the Frederique Constant Manufacture Worldtimer. Not only does it allow you to control all functions through the one crown (most others use pushers) but it's also in-house 🤓👍🏼

In order to look for Melbourne as one of the 24 cities representing the 24 time zones in world time, I think it would need to be a limited edition piece.

For example, I live in Singapore, Patek held the Watch Art Grand Exhibition in Singapore in 2019. A special edition (300pcs) Patek World Time 5930G-001 was created With SINGAPORE representing GMT+8 instead of BEIJING or HONG KONG in older pieces.

Image

I couldn't find any world time pieces with Melbourne on it yet.

·

Just one world time in my collection and alas, says Sydney. It’s a Citizen EcoDrive, was a frequent travel companion in the past. Good reliable watch, but not a really pretty face.

The Farer Roche is amazingly well built and if you have smaller wrist it fits better than most WT’s. cities are a little hard to read but still a great dial and case.

Was my first "Swiss" watch and it's amazing value. Wears a bit big at 42mm for me now as my tastes have evolved but very legible. Lovely movement with the skeletonized 24k gold rotor. I do wish I waited and got the later blue dial version instead.

Haha yeah thats what I was thinking as well. Melbourne is probably also too long to fit on the bezel maybe? one Can only help.  Thanks for sharing!

Yeah after seeing farer winning the best micro brand, I went to their website and saw this. i won’t lie, it definitely nearly made me buy it impulsively.

·

I should have also asked everyone : what cities would you prefer to see on a world timer if you could change things up? Surely I’m not the only insane person out there wishing they had their home city/ favourite city on their wrist! 😂

Glad the second Aussie city makes you happy! Indeed the watch is an old favorite.

·

The worldtimer is the place where watch companies can showcase their dial decorating expertise and many choose not to.  Plain face worldtimers disappoint me.

Ming 19.02 has Melbourne for GMT +10

I found this 1990s quartz mido that is more a gmt than a world timer. 38mm with silver dial and a cool bezel control to change time zone. It says sydney on it though. Very affordable if you can find one on ebay. Model is mido 5200.

For me, there are two which I find spell-binding.

There is a taupe brown-ish version of the Andersen Geneve (limited edition, I reckon) which is stunning too.

My Ma'anshan Shiba shows Canberra 堪培拉 ...which is sort of close but no cigar...
