Rising from the dead?

Let’s face it. Tag Heuer has been receiving a lot of criticism in recent years. So much so that as a relative newcomer to the obsession, I mean uhh, hobby… the more I consumed watch YouTube the more I disliked this brand I knew very little about. According to the talking heads, Tag Heuers were poorly made, overpriced, distastefully marketed ‘mall watches’ (which as far I can tell is the ultimate insult). I scoffed at the Tag section when I visited ADs. Then something remarkable happened.

I tried a few on.

Go ahead - sharpen those pitchforks and gather outside your mud huts with torches blazing because I’m saying it… I like Tag Heuer!

The Aquaracer has a fresh modern design, the Monaco is legendary albeit a bit large for my decorative-only 6in wrist, and this beautiful glass box Carrera has me considering a Tag over a Speedy.

I know, I know… hard to believe. It’s a beautiful watch with perfect dimensions. The movement is rather industrial looking but since my AD offers a discount without having to ask, I think it’s reasonable.

So here’s my question: what are your thoughts of Tag Heuer? Are there more out there like me willing to go against the grain or am I a fool succumbing to marketing folly?

I’d like to find a Autavia Isograph with the smoky gray dial in good shape.

·

My best friend in college had a Tag and I was so jealous, so when I finally decided to buy a "nice" watch...

So I loved their new Chrono (blue and black versions) and came close to seriously buying it. Every time I popped into the tag store, I was drooling over it until the SA said to look at the details with a loop. I did exactly that and saw what looked like rust on the sub dials. It’s turned me off and haven’t looked at it since. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Rust? I see why that turned you off. The example I looked at was immaculate. I’m curious if that has happened to other folks.

It was so weird. It’s was a brand new watch. Everything about it seemed perfect until I looked at it under a loop. I never look at watches under a loop. The one time I look at it under a loop per their suggestion, i notice the rust on the sub dials. I showed it to them too and they were surprised.

I’ll be sure to check it for rust before I buy then haha

I like what they have been doing of late.

·

It's fashionable to dislike some brands, TAG is one of those brands.

I think they make nice watches, and have been tempted by the Solargraph, but I don't own any.

·

I think the new watches are looking great. I would buy the glassbox tomorrow if it was thinner. The new gold one is so pretty too. It’s making me look at the vintage heuer models now cause my wrist is smaller so the modern glassbox looks big on me.

·

Interestingly enough I have had similar feelings for tag and agree with most of your points. This makes me think that TAG must be moving in the right direction. The latest Glassbox Carreras are "hits" for me. And the 60th anniversary is in my top 3 most coveted chronographs.

The skipper version is just gorgeous imo

·

My very first luxury watch. Love my Tag! Very reliable and easily serviceable. It’s been with me for almost 15 years with zero issues.

The glass box Carrera is really nice!

I like a few of their models very much! I may be wrong but they seem to have some watches that have some uniqueness to them. I really value that. Unfortunately Rolex doesn't have much of that because everyone seems to do homages to their complete catalog.

I Am mainly a divewatch fan but for my first chronograph i considered 4 brand popular models: daytona (which i couldnt get at retail so forget about it), speedmaster, navitimer, chronomaster, and carrera. Here's what i ended up with ☺️

Congrats and high five 🥳

Very nice looking

I Have had a TAG Link for over 7 years and its never missed a beat, lots of people comment about how good it looks. In my opinion watch snobs are missing out on some great watches.

Tag are universally hated by those within the community. But, brutish snobbery has become quite rife in the watch world and there's a massive cohort of sheep driving the masses to buy what's cool with the enthusiasts.

But outside, they're (Tag) still seen as an Uber premium brand by those not in this admittedly, strange hobby.

I'll fight anyone that doesn't agree that the current line of Aquaracers aren't some of the BEST looking dive watches anywhere. 90% of buying a watch is looks, and even with subjectivity taken into account, they make some super good looking watches.

·

Not an insult - I think TAG Heuer walks away this year as the most improved watch brand.

They’ve really been rolling with the punches lately, and I think their best is still to come.

Are they the best? Not by a long shot. But keep this up, and they’ll definitely get into the conversation. Time will tell.

·

I own the new Skipper and think it’s such a killer piece. Price was a little more than I’d have wanted to pay for a TAG but the luxury watch market isn’t exactly known for having bargains. Happy with this

I wonder where the hate for Tag has come from? They are an ok brand, I think. The models you’ve written about are quite nice. I say, if you like one, buy it!

·

I never understood the hate for TAG Heuer. If you like it or not is a matter of taste I guess. Basically there is nothing wrong with the brand but maybe they could not always justify the price to the general consumer. I would buy a TAG if the occasion comes along because they have some attractive models.

Thats a SICK piece man. Love the colours.

·

I think Tag Heur do amazing watches....and utterly meh mall watches. It seems that the mall watches deterred a lot of enthusiasts in the past, but it feels like they have changed that trend, and are currently winning a lot of hearts. I have yet to own one, but I no reason why this will not happen at one point.

·

The Glassbox is a great design, full stop, and as worthy of your money as the Speedmaster. Buy the watch, not the logo…though if we’re truly being honest and looking past the “marketing folly,” TAG Heuer is no worse a brand than Omega or Breitling or Tudor or anyone else selling chronographs at that price point. Snobs hate TAG because they’re common—the worst sin a luxury product can commit–which means you get no flex-points for saying you own one and that people looking at your watch might think you ONLY spent $1000 on it. Hardly a sane reason to overlook the Glassbox, which is, IMO, the best looking chrono on the market right now (though I very much prefer the black and silver version ;) and ticks all the same boxes as its competition.

·

I Think in TAG Heuer catalogue, there's a mix bag of hit and misses.

The Monaco is really epic, but I know a lot of people who doesn't like it due to the square case. The Carrera series have plenty of models, the newer chronograph is a spot on beauty. There's also a more dressier Carrera that are beautiful.

I think the misses that need to be reworked is the entry line, the Formula series. Maybe its just a question of aesthetics, but I can understand why people would call them "mall watches".

I Like it a lot so far. The movement is keeping +1 second per day, the glassbox shape is different and the case design is iconic to the carrera. I like the date placement as well where it is neatly tucked away if you don't need it and you can run the seconds hand a few ticks if you want to see the date. I also like this one over the blue version because it has a dedicated subdial for the running seconds hand. I always envision a chronograph as a triple (tricompax) subdial with this configuration (3, 6, 9) so it has perfect looks for me.

Moans and niggles: it only comes on leather strap and if you sweat a lot like me, you will have to go aftermarket rubber or bracelet, the date will not be readily available at a glance (double edge sword 😆), the silvery subdials although very lovely to look at may sometimes hinder legibility of the silver chronograph hands.

Don't force yourself if it's not for you it's not for you. ☺️

Thanks for the review! It’s still on the list. Not in a rush right now for it

Beautiful

I own two Tags and they are great. I wouldn’t hesitate to add more.
