Are there any watches you want just because they are from a certain country? Which country/-ies

There aren’t many watches that I want from a specific country. That’s mainly because my wishlist I big enough already and I’ve been trying to think long term with the accumulation of stuff I have.

I find France really interesting. So much history and architecture that make me drool 😍🤤. I think I would get a Baltic and maybe a vintage Yema or something so that I have a French watch with a French movement. As for Baltic, a salmon dial MR01 will be mine!

Image

One might point to my Serica as being a French watch, I don’t agree. Even tho “Swiss Made” is not dissimilar from the cheese, I still feel that the focus on Swiss institutions and emphasizing it to want “Swiss” on the dial. While I don’t need it to be Moser or Rolex levels of country-of-origin, Serica woule be more remarkable to me if they wore their home country a little more proudly.

As part of my learning about our (🇺🇸) little-talked-out but fascinating neighbors, Canada 🇨🇦, I think it’d be neat to have one from there. While I would love to have a mechanical Marathon GSAR, 4-digit dollars go towards the grails. But this Redwood diver is one my wallet can make peace with. It helps that I also like it

Image

I’ll be honest, “Swiss Made” stopped being a measure of watches for me kinda early on in this whole watch “thing”, but there is a certain allure I suppose. And it would be neat to have a Swiss watch. I thought about that one Swiss Flag Swatch. Tissot crossed my mind but they all feel a bit…generic. I think it would be nice to go for something more refined and from an interesting brand, like a vintage Rado Golden Horse.

It would be interesting to see if there are any Turkish brands out there. I’m sure there are Mexican ones out there too, but I’ve never heard of any. Would love to read y’all’s thoughts.

I didn’t know it was a Malaysian company. Neat

I’m tempted by this watch that’s assembled in my home city. The limited edition has a shamrock rotor rather than a ship propeller.

I’m not massively into dive watches and would probably go for something like an old Seamaster if I wanted one. It just feels like a missed opportunity to not have a Belfast watch! It’s on sale until the end of this month and I’ve been trying to put it out of my mind.

Oh that’s a cool Black Ba—no way they even used “black” in the name lol! That’s a little too close to the price of a Harod’s Editon Black Bay for that price, personally. Nice that is has a Selita tho

Seriously tho, that is a neat rotor and I get the appeal of having it for the origin’s sake

·

I like watches based on their aesthetics, their spec, and their price. Their country of origin is of no consequence to me, especially as most of them are actually produced in China

·

As a language nerd, I'm into unusual languages and numerals, e.g. the Swiss German day wheel on my Preisig, the Thai calendar and numerals on the Wise Flyboy, the Babayin characters on De Guzman watches etc. However, if I wanted a watch with Eastern Arabic numerals, I wouldn't necessarily buy a Nuun Official just because of the country of origin, because there are so many other options.

Same camp, man. Imo, if you’re gonna get an EAN dial, i highly recommend Seiko’s SNK063J5 and getting an EAN date wheel for it. It just works. And you get a different font on the dial than the Arabic equivalent of Times New Roman that’s one every wristwatch made outside of the regions that actually use the script on a daily basis.

That Swiss German day disc is fascinating. If i had infinite money, i would have Day-Dates in soo mnay languages, including Arabic ofc. Modern Greek, Modern Hebrew, Latin, and Basque—yes you read that correctly—would be the first ones I’d be getting. That and a blue-dial Konstantin Chaikan Decalogue Rega.

You would be surprised to know what is really inside your French, Canadian or Swiss watches and country of the hands that made the pieces

Nailed it haha. I’ll likely hold off on that reason. I have a Tudor with an ETA already! I’ve nothing against third party movements but I’d not be getting anything new other than the Belfast connection.

If Stephen McDonald started building Irish movements and had someone else make cases, I’d be kicking myself for not rolling that money into it. He’s otherwise engaged with MB&F 😅

I guess you could say some brands pique my interest more because they are from a certain country - such as British brands (like me). But it only gets me so far and I won't buy a watch if I don't actually like it, despite its origin/brand.

·

I like the idea of having as wide a variety of watches from different countries and will continue to look for opportunities to acquire. Of course they need to fit other criteria 😀.

·

I don't necessarily buy a watch due to the maker/model/parts of origin (I prefer to buy watches that I like the look of) but (especially in) countries that aren't generally regarded as 'watch making' countries - it's good to see that the industry is growing. It may initially mean that these countries have to buy certain parts, manufacture abroad or have derivative designs but everyone has to start somewhere. Once their knowledge and know-how improves then I'm sure they will eventually produce amazing pieces. Watch collectors and enthusiasts exist all over the world and to see some of them start their own brands, with such gusto, passion and bravery - it's definitely a trend to be admired and supported

I don’t think it would be a bad thing to get it. It’s not the movement that’s the issue for me, it’s that it’s a hop and skip away from a real Black Bay at retail

·

All points to buying watches like this with your heart rather than your head I guess!

In fairness you’re getting a ceramic bezel which is a little more Rolex than the black bay. If you’re cross shopping with another brand based in Ireland releasing watches, it’s quite a jump!

·

Yeah for sure. The Ianos Mihanikos diver from Greece. Not that I’ll ever find one for sale. So fire.

·

Germany for me, they produce the saxonia, max bill and U1, they are capable of great beauty and specification, eventhough Japan is close second with Marinemaster, credor and constant tourbillon.

·

Yes. However, what really interests me about watches is the challenge of making them.

As someone who has made a living working with his hands, I just respect that when I see it.

So, yes I do like seeing watches from other countries, but I really want to see that they are making at least some of the parts themselves, rather than just designing and then outsourcing everything to other countries.

·

I do enjoy less-common origins for watches.

Nice choice Ryan, I can see you’re a man of great taste!

Thank you?

I'd like to get something Mexican, but what I've seen, it's straight trash dude lol

Such as…?

As Trump would say ... CCCHHHIIINNNAAA!!! 🤣

San Martin has some nice originals. There are some Chinese brands out there that I have heard make good stuff but I i’m not aware of them. I’m sure I can find them with a bit of digging though

I see you have a San Martin so you're seeing and handling one of the best out there for the money. I'm a simple and classic watch enthusiast. So for me I'm not really looking at country specific watch making. Cheers brother 🍺🤙🏽

I’d get an Itay Noy, who has a boutique in Yaffo, Israel. Instead of “Saturday”, it says Sabbath in Hebrew.

Image

That is seriously cool! Wait…is that a date wheel in Hebrew numerals with the Sha?

There is really only one watch brand that I want because of the country it originated from (my family lineage traces back to Italy and Germany), but there are 2 others that I think it will be cool to have because I may not buy any other watches from that country in the future.

Italian... Panerai... Luminor Due. We're planning a 50th birthday/25th wedding anniversary trip to Italy and I'm contemplating buying one from the boutique in Florence (I'm just unsure if I want to deal with the VAT reimbursement and customs declaration process)

Image

Scottish... AnOrdain... Model 1. My wife loves Scotland and I plan to take my wife there on a trip and pick this one up in person when my build slot comes up.

Image

French... Baltic... MR01. It could be made anywhere in the world and I'd probably still want it.

Image

Yeah heard VAT and customs can be annoying. I think the key with that is gonna be planning and just being prepared. Contact the store and find out what you need to do.

Totally same about the MR01. I drool over its beauty

I would like to see the Indian watch market open up to the world at large. They are a growing market but not outside their country. Unfortunately the only venue is Ebay through third parties. Brokers there rape the buyers hard otherwise.

I have read that people use Shopree to order from HMT

While not built in South Africa, this Lemania was for a time the standard issue chronograph for the SAAF. It's the closest thing I have to a "grail."

Image

The Lemania 5100 is one of the coolest chronograph movements and it needs to come back. I cannot be convinced otherwise

·

My family’s heritage is Swiss, so I would like all the Swiss watches 🫣🥲
