It’s not easy being green

Well, that’s one thing that the frog got right. Green was the “couleur du jour” recently, until it was replaced and faded into the background. Being green is no longer popular - if you are a watch.

Image

I’m still unsure what happened or why. One day green was the one color that every collector must add on its trophy wall and the next day everybody had to get a Tiffany blue watch. Maybe there is a special decoding ring that get passed around, or I just missed the TPS memo because it lacked the correct cover page, but as much as I struggle to understand the logic governing watch fashion, the more I pity the color blinds who have to struggle to make any sense in this color coded mess.

Image

My SPB017 is green. I got it before green was cool, and before greenwashing became a thing (see also, “Save the whatever unlimited limited edition”). It’s really green.

Image

It’s also an Alpinist and I know that because it’s engraved on the back since it was manufactured before Seiko thought that removing everything that may confuse us that it’s not a Prospex was a great idea (Also see: How to castrate a fine watch by Prospexitating it).

Image

Being a green watch is not easy. It’s no longer fashionable and it’s a too vivid color to hide or pretend its something else. You wear it either because you don’t have any other choice, or because you lack a sense of fashion, or because it’s such a great watch that you don’t care about other people opinions.

Image

I wear my green Alpinist because it’s a great watch from a time when Seiko still cared.

And let's get real here: being green might no longer be fashionable for a watch, but watches are not the only green thing that can cause people to be uncomfortable around you. It could be worse:

I see nothing wrong with a beautiful green watch like the Alpinist you own. Sure, green doesn’t go with everything but it’s not unwearable. When you wear it with the right outfit it looks great! (Any white, black or tan tee shirt or polo and jeans for example). Who cares if it’s “out of style” as long as you like it. Here’s my green bezeled watch and I wear it quite a bit.

I didn’t get the memo too.. what to do with all my greens ?? 😂😂

·

I've never paid it a second thought. It's a watch on my wrist that I wear with just about anything. It's way more subtle than yellow, red, orange or the current push of purple.

Oof! That Breitling! 😍

I wear green all of the time. The color is still in. I didn't know that it went out.

The Breitling is very nice. The Oris is a lime.

I agree with all comments above. We all love our #greenwatches! 🥳 More brands put out their own versions, but it never "went out of fashion". Green is in and here to stay. Hence, last year, we started doing #greenfridays #verdeviernes #greendialday every Fridays!

It's just an apt time to break out our green watches and enjoy them simultaneously.

Hope to see all your #greenwatches at least every Friday! But if I see them more, way to go!

I too have the sarb017 its a JDM and the green is just stunning….enjoy

Green might be "out" in the current fashion, but I still would like a green dial; maybe in a bronze case.

·

I recently put my Alpinist on a green strap. Green is my favorite color and more green is the best green 😁

I love my Boldr Safari GMT, a very green watch, can add a bit of a pop of colour to very black outfits. If a watch colour seems odd, anything goes with black.

Mine is also a Made In Japan exemplary. I think that the Alpinists sold outside of Japan had a different model number.

Coming from a dude that makes his living from the fashion industry for the last decade. One of my largest focuses is trend forecasting. That being said I wear a green watch majority of the time. So looks like you should probably be my boss and give me the axe.

·

Love the Alpinist. Saving up for my first serious watch and it’s between the Alpinist and the Khaki Auto.

Hate to disappoint you, but it’ll be an SPB121 because I don’t mind the Prospex logo. 😂

I have no worries that green as a color will disappear from our life. What stumped me is how one year every reviewer had to show and review the latest green dial watch and suddenly the interest shifted to other colors.

When I got my Alpinist, green wasn't fashionable yet. The sunburst green dial was another feature that added to what made it unique and that caught my interest.

Yes, you're right, but those youtubers are just 👍 hunters. They are probably required to change their habits and trends if they want to stay popular. I have three watches and two of them are green. I don't regret it at all, I really like the green dial, especially on a sunny day. I don't even care about whether my outfit fits them or not. It doesn't matter to me because when I see the green dial on my wrist playing with the light, it calms me down.
