42mm too big?

Hey! I am just not sure if this 42mm watch, 50mm lug to lug looks ok on my 165mm wrist. What do you think?

(In case the first photo isn't clear, I am carrying my dog down stairs, he's too small to walk them)

I am quite impressed on how you got that wrist shot while holding the doggo.

These kind of pictures don't show as accurate of a case to wrist comparison, as the case is going to look much bigger than in real life (kind of like how the camera always adds 10lbs). I would recommend changing your zoom to x2 and holding the camera further back to give a more realistic represenation of how it sits on your wrist.

With that said, all told it's still a clean watch👌

I do think that it’s too big. You’ll get lots of folks saying it’s of no consequence, but I am not sure. Your asking the question suggests to me that you feel that it is as well. 🤷🏼‍♂️

Thanks, you degenerate. I did shoot all but the dog shot at 1.5 or 2 X

I hope I didn't offend you. I watch your videos and you called me that so many times I just had to pay you back 🫣

Looks good, but I prefer bigger watches.

Thank you. I usually hang around 38-40mm so I am not sure about this one. But I also gather that pilot watches are bigger.

Hey, call em like you see it🤣🍻

·

That's not really true. All you other watch nerds like me care 🫣

Big, yes. Too big? I don't think so - the pushers add a bit more length to the watch and I'm sure the camera lens also is distorting the actual size a bit. Regardless, the watch is meant to be highly legible in a cockpit, so it makes sense to be on the large size too.

·

Thank you for that, I feel more confident now 🙏

·

Nice watch. Doesnt matter what we think but since you asked, respectfully, it is a big watch for your wrist.

Thanks. As long as it doesn't look like I am a kid playing with his dad's watch, I'm ok 😅

Looks great. Nice looking watch 🔥

·

It's pushing it, I would say 50mm lug to lug is your limit. Def think 48mm and below would suit you best - and I say that as someone with similar wrist parameters.

·

Hi. It's a really nice watch, but frankly, in my point of view, it's really too big for your wrist.

Thank you for your honesty.

·

We've got the same size wrist and those are the same dimensions as my biggest watch:

Image

Its on the limit for me but it still works for sure, the hanhart being a pilots watch means you can get away with it even more too

I think your example works better because of the bezel and a smaller dial 🤔

Oh, that is an interesting analogy 🤔

But I think you can easily go for 40mm watches with a 160mm wrist

As it so happens I have exactly one 40mm watch. It more than anything depends on the perspective I would say, literally 😉

Some people select this as a reference shot of what looks fine. Based on the blow pic you'd be hard pressed to see how that watch might be too big.

Image

Others pick the classic wrist shot and use top down overhang as a measure of fit. Again, although closer it might actually pass.

Image

I personally pick the frontal mirror shot with the palm of my hand facing down. That's usually the most awkward looking vieelw and in this instance resulting in significant 12 o'clock overhang.

Image

I need to go down to much smaller watches to get rid of that. At 34mm the situation is arguably better.

Image

Based on these last shots the Explorer 2 is too large and looks clumsy and awkward in my opinion. For what it's worth, I have always liked that watch (probably wanted one for close to 10y) and I'm not immune to the "buy what you like" idea (given how I bought one two months ago) instead of buying what actually fits (according to my definition at least). Then again I still haven't peeled the caseback sticker of the Explorer 2 because I haven't decided whether or not it's too much too large.

Wow, you got this whole scientific way of determining the fit 😁

Ok, how bad does this look?

Image

And I think the 40mm explorer looks good on you. Be real, how often is your wrist in that awkward position?

·

It’s a little big, but it’s both a pilots watch and a chrono so it’s they’re meant to be worn large. I think you get away with it

That is certainly not a small watch 😄

I don't know how much time a watch spends in that position while worn, it would be whenever one checks the time (which is when I see the watch and therefore why I care how it looks then), the hand rests palm down and also while typing on a keyboard. Something to monitor in the future 😉 for science!

If we're being real though, I probably just have a chip on my shoulder because I have tiny wrists and hands and lack the self confidence to wear a watch that someone might perceive as too big out of fear I might get a nasty comment 😅

Looking at that overhang you mention on the photo of the Rolex... Did you consider moving a link from one side to the other? Maybe it's not an issue that it overhangs but that you need an extra link on one side and a link less on the other so it would sit right on top of your wrist. Science 😅

I don't know who can give you a nasty comment to be honest. People don't care about watches and even less how they fit. I just care about my wife's opinion on it, not that she is an expert but she'll tell me if she doesn't like a watch and then I would just wear a different one when going somewhere with her.

Ha, I did have to twist my arm quite hard to force that amount of overhang. But you are actually correct, the 5 digit bracelet configuration requires 5 fixed links at 6 o'clock. That said, this can be rectified by one of several modifications. Some people break a link but I personally either use a Glidelock clasp (which does away with one link) but I also have two solid segments from a Submariner 97200 bracelet which fits perfectly and has one less fixed link which allows me to wear it in a 4 link configuration with the original clasp and matching taper (probably my preferred option). In summary, I did give this a fair amount of thought. Here's another pair of pictures that perhaps better illustrate how it usually sits

Moving one link, or even a half link, would move it too far off centre as clasp at the bottom is also nicely centred. I think it's just quite a broad watch and as the wrist is twisted it gets pushed over the edge. People probably don't care about watches but they do notice nice things in general. I personally like watches for reasons unrelated to social status etc. But I'd say most people would not wear any kind of jewlery or designer acessories if nobody noticed. And people particularly care about someone having nicer, i.e. more expensive, things than them and will, for one reason or another, on occasion say something to make others feel bad... at least in my experience. I certainly got much more negative remarks regarding my watches (too big, too gold, too old, too expensive, to many) than compliments. Perhaps I am just living in a particularly toxic environment, I don't know, or I lack self confidence and am overly sensitive.

Ok, now we are moving into psychology and philosophy, I like this 😁

Only my two brothers and a friend that's into watches comment on my watch. But I do move in small circles and live in a small town amd work in a small company so maybe I am not exposed to the same type of people as you.

The watch looks great on your wrist, I say take the back sticker off 😄

Ouch! man deep down and honest it’s a bit big. I have a small wrist size 42mm is my max. Unless it was gift given keep it for sure. I made a bad awful mistake when I first started. I went and order about 6 watches at once on my first year. Very sad out come happens Most were big watches 45-51mm. I got lucky only 2 were 38-40mm. So 2 out of 6! I was so caught up with looks and did not bother to check out the watch size. There’s many big watches out I really like. If my wrist was more than 7+ I be Invicta king or big Daddy diesel for sure!

Thank you for your honesty. I've warmed up to the size now, maybe the pictures above show it bigger than it actually is, check this one out.

I have a pretty flat wrist so even though it's small in circumference, it's wider than you'd expect when looking at it from the top.

That’s not bad looking at all any bigger than that you be pushing it. That shot right there looks like you ready for your next flyer fighter flight. I almost got the lunar pilot lucky I tried it on. My mistake was making go-ho purchases with out realizing how big they were.

·

Everybody knows 42mm is too big.
