Preminu SKX?

I love the look and the design of the SKX, I have the SKX009 from 2000 that I upgraded the movement to the NH36.

That said, there are some things that I don't like as much, it could be thinner and have better finishing for example. Now I know there are mods, and like I said I did change the movement on this one so I am very familiar with modding BUT is there a watch, an homage, that I can just buy ready made that improves uppon the SKX? For some reason after modding a watch I stop wearing it. I feel like it's compromised and no longer a reliable tool and it just feels hacky and like I'm making a franken watch.

Let me know!

I mean - depending on your taste that's kind of what the new 5KX series is. I prefer the vintage, personally (especially with an upgraded movement) but to each their own.

I don't think the 5kx actually improves on anything other than the movement and I certainly wouldn't call it premium.

Islander watches are pretty much the direct answer. I had one back in the day and it was great.

Islander would be my other suggestion as well, though now I'm not sure what you mean by 'premium.'

What reference number exactly?

Thanks, I'll check it out. By "premium" I mean better than the SKX, sapphire crystal, better finishing, better movement, thinner etc.

ISL-49 would be the most obvious model but look at the catalog! They are all great

Debated having an NH36 installed in mine for the hacking and hand winding. I wouldn’t consider that a major mod though since it doesn’t change the look of the watch.

My 007 has the crown, the bezel, the chapter ring, the movement and the crystal all upgraded. It feelS much more refined and more of a complete watch, not Franken at all but how it was supposed to be built.

How about the SPB143 or SPB453? They’re part of the 62mas line and there is no Pepsi (yet) but I think the overall dimensions are better and so is the movement. Still diver certified. Not as cheap as the skx when it first came out, but it’s still an iconic watch from the brand.

No doubt these are more premium than the SKX007, but I am looking for that vibe and look.

Maybe wait until 2026, I bet they’ll launch a 30th anniversary SKX reissue under the Prospex line. I’m guessing 200m diver, same case, 6r movement, solid end link jubilee, at $1000 too 😂

That would be awesome. Other than that price 🤪

Love my 5KX.

Seiko is getting too expensive while showing less than better Aliexpress watches.

As much as peeps knock it, I'd wholeheartedly echo what @88MilesPerHour and @fathersonwatchtalk recommended....

The SRPD 5KX.

Especially if one wants to buy OEM.

They are fantastic watches. Maybe not "premium" but still very good.

If wanting slimmer, go with the DressKX in matte, I did and love it. Same traditional Seiko design, newer looks and a slimmer case to boot.

Check out some of @kentuckyman30 's posts, there's a few of the same movement and seals under water.

Sapphire is nice to have, but hardlex is easy to replace and usually when the inevitable post up your hardlex scratches posts come out there aren't quite as many as one would think. There's still some, which is why I recommend acrylic. YMMV.

SKX is a tough balance for me too. I like watches that are built nicer, and the 7S26 annoys me. The 5KX colors can seem cartoony. I enjoyed a blueberry SSK003 briefly until I got an SPB381 and SPB143. It felt silly having both the Seiko 5 GMT and the Prospex model, so I gifted the 5. I’ve considered re-buying the SSK though. Great watch.
