Travel to India?

Friends, I’m in a conundrum and would love your opinion. I’m traveling to India with work next week and tomorrow Im excited to be taking delivery of a GMT master II 116710LR.

I’m very much a “wear your watch” kind of guy, but since this is my first time to India I’m a little nervous about whether I should take my “brand new to me” watch. What would you do?

Pretend it’s a fake that you got there

·

I would insure it. Then wear it’

I'd leave it at home. Not worth being nervous about.

Great answer

If it causes stress, then it’s not worth it. Enjoy the beauty in your trip. The watch will be there for you when you return.

·

There's being overly cautious & there's being smart.

I think leaving it home in this instance is playing it smart.

On a first trip to a new location, you'll have enough to think about without worrying about your new watch.

·

No way would I take that there. Nope 👎

·

I'd leave it behind . . . . . . . And buy a locally made watch while there as a momento.

·

Hell no

·

It depends on where in India, but i’d say better be safe and have it waiting for you safe and sound at home.

·

I never travel with my expensive timepieces! My rule is to take whatever I don’t mind losing…

·

Take it! Create memories!

I travel to Belize. I leave my Omega at home and wear a Vostok.

If you’re this worried but still want to wear a watch, get somehting cheap and unassuming, and leave the Rolex at hone. Personally, I’d wear my T45181. Its dual time function came in handy while i was traveling a while ago. Costs ~45 bucks, is a decent size, has digital functions, lights up. And if you want to go even cheaper, you could ge a Casio Forester, which is a stripped-down equivalent of this, from Walmart. $22 bucks in total, that one.

Of course not.

Ive been to India a few times and it can get very hectic, i would leave it at home.

I’m from India and I wouldn’t recommend it. Sorry but our country’s just not THAT safe yet and besides, some mental math never hurts!

It’s fine in some parts but better to be safe than sorry. Fact of the matter is, people will know you’re a foreigner so you’ll definitely be overcharged for everything and a Rolex won’t help that!

That said, hope you enjoy my country!

·

Wear a Seiko there and buy a piece from HMT or Jaipur Watch Co as a souvenir!

·

I wouldn't do it, unless it is your only watch. And if you do, keep it hidden under the long sleeves of your T-shirt/shirt for all your trip there. Also, travel with a copy of your in-voice, in case customs target you.

Congrats on you 116710LN!

Wear something inexpensive. Not only can a luxury watch cause customs issues, you will also be in an unfamiliar environment. If you were a visitor to the US for the first time, you would also have no idea what is safe and what is not. It's generally not that whole countries are unsafe, with certain exceptions, but that certain areas and situations aren't.

Right! This is not about the watch, this is about your state of mind while you’re there with the watch.

By the answers above I’m guessing a lot of Crunchers haven’t been to India. Generally they are a very nice people and if you’re going over for work chances are you’ll be getting around in a bubble and with a driver from place to place. Just be a bit smart in the street or tourist spots like you should be anywhere including in our own home city.

This is what I was thinking— my company provides a driver/security so I’m guessing I will be in a bubble most of the time vs wandering the streets at night alone.

Leave it home. Not a good idea bringing a watch that is some people's life earnings on your wrist.

·

No, no, no. A country where women get raped on buses is a no for wearing a nice watch. Take a G-Shock!

·

Leave it at home mate.

·

Take it with you. The watch will then make the trip even more special.

That’s right— they’re 13.5 hours ahead of me. Still a fun watch to wear regardless 🤣

It’s a great watch. It would be a shame not to wear it. I’m not even sure what the best practice would be in setting your watch when you go to places like that. Do you go 13 hours forward by adjusting the hour hand then go forward 30 minutes and hope that you remember home time is off by 30 minutes? Or do you just go, who cares, let me set it to local time/leave it at home time? Safe travels.

·

Take your Timex with you. Don’t get robbed.

·

As an Indian & a watch lover, I would suggest to leave it at home.

·

Thanks everyone! Decided to leave this at home and take my vintage datejust instead. YOLO! 😎
