I just ordered the bottom of the line Laco. It has heritage, good reviews and is pretty inexpensive at $400. If Laco's started at the price of the bottom Stowa, I'd be more interested in a cheaper alternative, but at $400 I'll go for heritage (I never had a problem with Miyota movements).
I do not think expensive watches are an investment. An investment is something you expect to appreciate in value. The great majority of watches lose value over time. Since there is an occasional model that appreciates in value it shouldn’t be considered an investment. There are lottery tickets that occasionally pay off, and horse race bets that occasionally pay off but since most don’t, they are not considered investments. When people call them investments they are rationalizing a major expenditure.
Some people buy expensive watches to demonstrate to themselves or others that they “made it”. That’s fine if it gives them pleasure as long as it doesn’t cause financial harm. If you don’t get a great deal of satisfaction from owning expensive watches I don’t see any reason to buy them. Friends who intimidate you into buying expensive watches are not unlike those who intimidate their “friends” to do things that are not good for the body or soul (drugs, etc). Are they the best kind of friends?
I prefer the one on the left with lines on the dial. Generally I prefer textured dials. I don’t have two watches that are very similar but there are plenty of collectors who like and collect watches that look very similar.
