39mm Tudor Ranger Review

I purchased the new Ranger on July 15th of 2022, exactly one week after it launched. I’ve never made such and impulse purchase but something about the watch pulled me in. The first week I wondered if I had made a mistake, not because of anything about the watch itself, just the fact that I feel like I made a rushed decision partially influenced by fear of being subjected to a super long wait if I hesitated. Silly, I know.

It’s just over a year later now, and I can definitively say it was not a mistake. I have and have owned a good number of watches at this point including models from JLC, Rolex, Grand Seiko, other Tudors, Omega, Laco, and a number of excellent and not so excellent micro brands. Out of all of these the Ranger is hands down, without a doubt, the best wearing experience of any watch I’ve ever owned.

Maybe it’s just ideally suited for my just over 7” kind of oval shaped wrist. But at 39mm in diameter, around 12mm thick, with an oyster style bracelet with female end links, T-fit adjustable clasp and all brushed finish this watch is truly like a second skin. And I routinely reach for it because of its comfort, accuracy, legibility, and carefree wearing experience.

For the year I have owned it it has kept nearly perfect time, losing less than a second per day, actually closer to one second per week. if this watch had a date it would be perfect, for me. I am for sure a date window guy. But as a dateless watch I think this is one of the best examples of simplicity done right. And I am a very simple man after all. It even helped me realize that I am drawn to numerals on a dial. I just got my new Laco Pro and adore it 🙂

I can’t recommend this watch enough.

  • The bracelet is fantastic
  • The case size, bit diameter and thickness, is ideal for a 7” wrist
  • The movement runs at near perfect time
  • The dial has incredible legibility
  • I love the lume
  • I love the dial “furniture”, even the hour hand
  • The crown size is perfect
  • The all brushed case makes it ideal for daily wear, even when working with your hands around the house
  • I honestly have none, just that I’d prefer to have a date window

Nice review. Glad to hear it was a good purchase

Excellent, thank you. Really rather fancy one myself - & the lack of date is a big + for me.

·

Well you know I agree with you.

I also think it looks fantastic without the date. Great symmetry. My practical brain just likes to see the date too 🙂

Well you know I agree with you.

Seriously, it’s just such a good watch all around. It has far exceeded any expectations I had, and even met some I didn’t know I had! A real pleasure to wear.

·

I’ve definitely gone back and forth on opinions about the color of the lume, applied markers vs printed, and font choice. But I found when I let go of those thoughts and just “experience” the watch I love it and it makes me smile.

·

I completely agree, I initially bought it whilst I was waiting for my FXD and BB Pro and once I got both of those I thought I would wear the ranger less… but it hasn’t happened I still wear it all the time.

And I agree that bracelet is better than most of my watches including the black bay pro.

I’ve taken my ranger skiing, climbing, hiking, biking, SUP-ing and if I could track my running I’d probably wear it for that too!

I’m not rising to the bait of a perfect score, but having seen the man and the watch together in the flesh, it is true, he does love this watch. 😂

·

A very underrated watch from Tudor!

picks self up off of floor after kind words from @Porthole…..

You just made me realize I never even discussed the fact that the specs include the minimum amount of required WR and screw down crown required for daily wear.

I really like this Tudor, wanted to buy the original with the smiley dial but there was too much blank space on that iteration( I like bigger watches)but that might be almost boring. When I visited the Tudor boutique tried to convince the Mrs to look at the BB58 bronze, she doesn’t want anymore watches that I can borrow walked out while I was putting my name down for a Ranger on a bracelet. Going to need a better plan to source the 58 bronze.

I have the 43mm heritage Black Bay Bronze and I really love it. Something about the Explorer style numerals gets me. I do wish it was thinner though like the BB58. Maybe the new METAS movement means thinner heritage models are on the way. Fingers crossed.

Hi I have the 43 bronze as well it is thick but still a fine watch.

I think this sums up the watch well. It’s not a watch to grab your attention, and it may not hold the owner’s infatuation all the time. But you keep going back to it and it grows on you as indispensable.

·

The Ranger looks too much like this Longines to not be a homage

One of my grails 😍

·

I love mine and it gets a lot of wrist time. One of my favorites, don't think I could part with it. I like the clean dial, would not be able to read the date if it had it

Great Review! Thank you for posting! I finally viewed the Ranger in the metal last week. I purchased the 36mm Explorer I and gifted it to my daughter. I wore the watch a month and loved it but it was a bit small. My daughter fell in love with it; nuff said. I looked at the new 39mm Explorer and the Ranger at the same AD . The Ranger is the superior sports watch. The Ranger is simple perfection. I love the crystal, the bracelet etc. A date version would be a grand slam watch! A Titanium version would be incredible. As it is, I may just pick up the current Ranger. So glad you love it one year later = very good sign

My experience with the Ranger is similar to yours. I ordered it immediately but second guessed myself for awhile. It sat in the box for a few weeks while I contemplated selling it while they were still hard to find. I foolishly watched a number of bad reviews but finally decided to fit the bracelet and enjoy it. It's a great watch and I am glad that I own it. Personally, I only like having a date window on GMT watches since that is what I wear to work. The vast majority of the negative reviews involve people that did not wear the watch. If they did wear it, it was for a very short time to take some pictures and complain. I love Tudor bracelets and it's nice to have one that flys under the radar when necessary.

Glad you decided to wear it! It’s the only watch in my collection when wearing it I tend to forget I have anything on at all. For me it’s that comfortable.

Great review! I also put my name down on release day, it arrived in November. In addition to your likes, I'd add the finishing. I have a BB58 which has more polished bits, but the quality of the brushed surfaces and crisp edges on the Ranger really give it the feeling of a precision tool that doesn't show in flat stock photos. The crown also has the same style teeth as the BB58, but somehow has much more grip. And as you said, the T-Fit is awesome and really adds comfort and usability- snug when I don't want it to move around during a run, loose when it's warm or if I want to sleep with it on.

To the dislikes, on my ~6 3/8" wrist the BB58 wears perfect, this definitely wears larger due to the larger dial/bezel ratio. I feel like a half mm wider bezel ring would nail the proportions, or a 1mm smaller case, but that's just for me, and it's still a keeper.

·

Thanks for the review. I love this watch, but I can't appreciate the shape of the hour hand.

·

I highly recommend it. Just something about the proportions and the bracelet with the T-Fit clasp that makes it wear so well. And with the all brushed finish I feel comfortable wearing it while doing almost anything. And it's super accurate!

·

I love the ranger as I looks kinda like the 1016 explorer , one of my favourite Rolex’s

·

Great watch, I love mine. Thanks for the review.

The Ranger was my first no-date watch and I never realized how much I look at the date on my watch until I didn't have one. I don't mind it too much because I use the Ranger as a field/beater watch but it made me realize I prefer a date. Still, I love the look of the dial and hands personally (for a field type watch). I also knew there was no date when I bought the watch and I like the dial symmetry and Arabic numerals. I also love the inclusion of the Ranger name on the he dial as well. I give the dial a 4.5 out of 5.

My Ranger keeps great time now but I had to have the movement repaired almost immediately after purchase. Runs great now but giving your new watch back for 5 months for a warranty repair right after purchase sucks. Since the movement needed a repair so soon after purchase but runs great now I give it a 4 out of 5.

I prefer the watch on a strap. The bracelet is okay, but nowhere near as good as my IWC bracelet with a microadjust system that can be used with one hand while still wearing the watch. It's annoying to take off the Ranger bracelet to make adjustments after being spoiled by my IWC. The bracelet also comes with no half links so I had to buy one from Uncle Seiko to get a good fit. Of course, it's better to have a watch with an okay microadjust system than having no microadjust at all. A half link should really be included though at this price. The Ranger bracelet is also a bit sharper and less comfortable than my IWC bracelet but it was also a significantly cheaper watch. With pass through straps, the watch also wears bigger. It's better with 2-piece straps. I would give the Ranger bracelet a 3 out of 5 but would rank wearability of the watch higher overall if you get the right strap. 20mm lug width is a huge plus.

I think the lume on the Ranger could be better as well. I would give it a 3 out of 5.

Is the Ranger perfect? No, I don't think it is. However, I still like my Ranger a lot and plan on keeping it. It is a great field watch with 100 meter water resistance, a screw down crown, a good size and a dial that I love and that pairs well with a variety of straps. I highly recommend it even if I don't think it's perfect like this reviewer. Well worth the premium over a Hamilton khaki field in my opinion.

I had to send my Aqua Terra in for a service after owning it for only 9 months. They had it for 3 months. I was super annoyed, but I am happy to report it keeps absolute perfect time now. The date wheel was also off just slightly and they fixed that too. Now it’s an ideal watch.

This #tudor review is prime. Here is the absolute truth: “I have and have owned a good number of watches at this point including models from JLC, Rolex, Grand Seiko, other Tudors, Omega, Laco, and a number of excellent and not so excellent micro brands. Out of all of these the Ranger is hands down, without a doubt, the best wearing experience of any watch I’ve ever owned.” THIS. 100% this. Same. Same.
