I’ve been into watches ever since I was child sneaking my father’s Heuer Autavia or Omega Constellation onto my wrist and wearing to high school.
Q: What was the first watch you ever owned?
A Timex digital in the mid 1970s. I remember it was blank until you touched the front, then the time would briefly light up in red LEDs.
Q: Do you have a watch with a particularly interesting story behind it?
My father bought his Omega Constellation in 1956, but stopped wearing it soon after. I started wearing it in the early 80s, but it would only run for an hour or two before it would stop.
When he passed in 1995, I had it fully overhauled and it remains my favorite dress watch to this date.
Q: What is one piece of advice you have for someone just getting into watches?
If it’s super-trendy right now, it will be out of style soon. Stick with the timeless, classic styles.
Q: What brands have been getting your attention lately?
Somehow over the last two years my watch box (I have a strict one in, one out policy and never more than the ten slots I have) my collection has gradually become more and more British and British micro-brands and independents have really been making a lot of what I like.
It started with my Vertex M100, and now fully four of my ten watches are British, and three of them are what I would call dressy field watches.
Q: What is your grail watch and why?
1969 Heuer Autavia with Valjoux 72.
My father had this watch for decades and I started wearing it when I was about 12. He had it overhauled and gifted it to me for my 18th birthday, but it was stolen soon after.
If I ever find one in good condition and cheaper than a good used car I would buy it immediately.
