Glashutte

German watchmaking I feel is a bit understated, but if you factor craftsmanship, quality, and history... It is a force in the world of horology. My focus in this poll is the region of Glashutte and the fine brands that are manufactured there. I am leaving out A. Lange & Sohne because it's just not going to be fair. If you could only buy one of the following brands, which is it and what model? If you have experience with any, please share.

It is interesting that you left ALS out but included Moritz Grossmann, which makes arguably higher end pieces than ALS. Since they too are out of the realm of most mortals, going with the one with a good balance of luxury and heritage GO.

I agree with you fully, I guess the only reason for me leaving out ALS is because it is a popular brand that has traction and hype.

I can’t speak to the others, besides knowing that they are all well regarded. But I have two Glashutte Original watches and love them!

Clearly some very different price points here but I went for Muhle and their SAR as it's always a watch that has fascinated me with its unique looks and overbuilt nature. 4mm thick crystal!

Lots of Tutimas I like also.

I have 3 German watches, but only 1 from Glashutte, my Nomos Tangente 38. I can say nothing but good things about it.

I think the SAR & Tangente alone say something about the breadth of watchmaking coming out of Glashutte!

You my friend have a good taste of German craftsmanship.

I have to say Muehle Glashuette, even though the others are higher status wise. I've been collecting MG since they started making watches in the late 1990's. I met the people running the company, and love their form follows function approach to virtually everything they make.

You are a lucky person to have met them.

Why is everyone obsessed with calling German watchmaking understated, or underrated, and then counter that with saying “except for… [insert ridiculously popular high tier brand here]”…

I’m at a loss…

·

I want a watch from Glashutte, but so far have ended up with ones from the Schwarzwald region (Laco, Junghans). I aspire to GO - and ALS of course - but will probably have a Muhle, Tutima or Union long before.

Well, I believe the majority of people (average population) talk about Swiss & Japanese watches before venturing elsewhere.

The fact is German horology is nothing short of brilliance. It's just not everyone knows it, except if you are a watch enthusiast.

Keep trucking on my friend and may your journey lead you to the promised land.

I love the GO SeaQ Panorama Date. Just wish it was a touch thinner.

I own two Muhles and can't recommend them higher. For 2-3k, you are getting superior quality for that price range. This 29er Big pointer date is just such a beautiful watch.

That watch looks amazing

GO would always be my first choice excluding ALS. Although, I have been tempted by Moritz Grossmann. I just find MG a little too feminine for my taste. Reminds me in some ways of the feminine styling of Cartier.

Loads of great watches from the region of Glashutte including the great vintage GUB watches available.

Only one GO so far in the collection...

I am patiently waiting to order this one from Union...

Oh...I almost forgot...one of the really great brands from Glashutte...in many ways superior to Muhle, in my opinion, Tutima...

This is the M2 Coastline military watch produced by Tutima in collaboration with Revolution Watch...this is a badass chronograph with black DLC titanium case and kevlar strap...one super tough watch...

I wasn’t sure how to vote. I already own a Nomos Club Campus. I would love to own a GO if money were no object, but I’m never going to actually purchase one. So, I voted for Muhle Glashutte because it is attainable (for me) and I have actually looked at a few with an eye to buying one in the future. I like the 29er chronograph with cream dial.

I love Nomos, and many other German brands. However if I could only own one of the list provided, I’d go with Muhle-Glashütte, specifically the SAR Rescue timer.

it’s a watch that has been on my list for a while. It fits well with my love of sailing and seafaring. I really like the fact that Muhle Glashütte is still operated by the same family, and has a history of building high quality marine instruments.

·

For me the preference would probably be the Muhle Glasshutte SAR Rescue-Timer Lumen.

Image

I own a Nomos Ahoi, which I quite like thank you very much, but the SAR is way better for me, YMMV of course. The only issue I have with the SAR is that at 42mm it's too large for me.

·

Are they really? Don't forget about Lange & Sohne, Stowa, Laco, Junghans. Where I am from they're not understated at all.
