What watch would you grab?

As the forest burns around me in Oregon, I began to ask myself, “if everything around me was on fire and I had to grab one, just one watch, what would I grab?” God forbid this actually happened.

For me it’s Tuesday and I have my Speedy on. Also my wife bought it for me so it holds a special place.

Gotta go with my modded 5. Would be a shame to lose the pro diver I picked up in Florida, but hey, I was wearing the Seiko when I found it, sooooo

·

Either the Mrs 80 year old Vacheron or her late father's '67 Omega. They're not the most expensive, but have the most personal value.

·

Rolex DJ given to me by my wife before we were married.

Is that the 3861? Looks like it, but the clasp on yours is different.

·

Nope, Nope, Nope. I’m grabbing them all. The wife and dogs have legs and can run, my watches don’t!

·

It would either be my Speedy or the Santos de Cartier (mostly likely Speedy).

·

My family, pets, and important papers would be priorities in that situation.

Screw the watch.

When the war struck in Ukraine Feb 2022, I grabbed the entire collection. Really couldn't sacrifice any one of my babies!

Take the dogs! Wife is a liability. God's given you a free get-out-of-jail card. Use it!!!

·

Easy choice for me .. hope everything turns out alright there for you

The assumption is that those are already taken care of... 🙄

It's a thought exercise to get people to pick their "one" watch, just framed in a different way.

I'd take my steel Navigator, it's the one most likely to be on my wrist anyway.

·

all of them 🤣🤣🤣🤣 the one I'm wearing and the entire collection

·

The first watch that started it all and a gift from my wife. The Raymond Weil freelancer. That's the one I'd keep.

·

Of course I would take my 1675 Pepsi

I guess I didn't read that part in the OP.

Hence the use of assumption...

The obvious answer is that people will take care of loved ones, pets and important documents first. It's so obvious that most people don't even bother with that caveat first in these sorts of discussions.

Fair enough if you aren't accustomed to it, but in future that's the base assumption that should be made. Only a sociopath would save a watch over their family.

Calling it an obvious answer is a bit of assumption in , and of, itself.

My mistake was replying to yet another "What's the one watch" thread for the 1,785,321st time.

I actually almost had this happen recently 😅

the fire alarm in my apartment building went off at 4am, I got up, grabbed my BigEye from my nightstand, and put on some pants (in that order even) before heading outside to find out it was a false alarm...

·

If that happened to me, big problem.

·

I'd grab my great grandfathers two pocket watches first. Then my Herbelin Newport Slim, because there are only 300 in the whole world. Finally, my Sturmanski because there are only 3000 of those. I have a Colt 1903 and Colt 1908 vest pistol I'd really want to preserve, though for SHTF survival I'd prioritize my .22 Magnum Keltec PMR and CMR 30, pistol and carbine matched set. In my bug out bag I have a months worth of lifeboat food, water purifiers, the deed to my house, passports and birth certificates. I should probably add some cash and 500 rounds of 9mm to barter with.
