Are You A Flipper Or A Hoarder?

Do you typically hold on to most, if not all your watch purchases? Or, are you quick to move on from watches if you don't fall in love with them or if you're looking to fundraise for something pricier? I'd imagine many of us fall somewhere in between the two ends of the spectrum, but for the purpose of this poll, pick the one you identify with more, and drop your thoughts in the comments below!

I am certainly more of a hoarder. It normally takes multiple years of a watch collecting dust before I finally decide to move on from it. I also don't like the idea of selling off watches in the collection to fund a bigger purchase...I just can't help but think I'd end up missing the ones I sold even if the new watch is amazing.

I feel the same way; when I do eventually sell I'm usually not looking to turn a profit, unless it's a watch I would have expected to appreciate in value. I've sold watches to friends a couple times for a decent loss, because I knew it was going to a good home and my hope was it would generate their interest in watches so I can have some other sickos the share the hobby with lol.

I'm hoarding six and trying to flip one, without much success.

Watch hoarder. I have 60+ options each morning when I arise, something I enjoy.

·

Hoarder. Buy only watches that fit a larger vision and direction of a collection. Buy only watches that can fill a role required for a collection that are timeless in style, and if you choose wisely, they will be.

I have completed my collection. In part, because I set parameters for the collection and partly because I loath the prospect of eating the depreciation that will be included in any trade.

Only let 2 go in many years, so I'm definitely a hoarder.

·

Sell? What is that? Definitely a hoarder. I just hope I don't end up with an Isle of Misfit Toys situation. Thankfully, I love and wear all my watches (for now/ but 1 more is coming).

·

I'm a bit fickle. I'm one in one out usually. My collection currently stands at 6 with maybe 2 keepers. I've sold maybe 15 watches. If find it hard to justify keeper a watch I don't wear often unless it's super affordable.

Funny that most people in the poll admit to hoarding - I'm in that camp too. But if that's the case, why are there so many second-hand watch listings???

(A: "Selection bias")

My mother, sister and maternal aunt were all true hoarders. I'll be damned if I let that happen to me.

·

I collect what I love, and keep those given to me as gifts or heirlooms. So by this definition, I'm a collector. I neither hoard (i.e. constant acquiring and keeping for fear of losing, or losing out), nor do I buy and sell.

·

Dunno which I'd be, I try to keep my core collection to 6/7 so operate a fairly strict one in one out policy so my collection keeps improving 🤔

Personally, I do a lot of thinking and soul searching before purchasing anything so I don’t end up flipping anything I own. I hate that feeling of buying something(like a luxury watch) only to have buyer remorse once you own it. Of course I avoid hoarding and keeping my watch collection to a manageable quantity. This helps me have maximum enjoyment with the very select pieces I decide to own. I guess a “less is more” approach to collecting.

·

This is easy...never sold a watch.

I have given away a lot of watches, but never sold one.

I think this is the more enlightened approach to collecting, which I only wish I could follow more strictly. And it brings up a good point - you are neither a hoarder nor a flipper if you curate only a small collection of keepers. I'm hoping to pare down my bloated collection over the next few years to get to this point.

I don't buy things to sell them. I buy things I want.
