Grandma gave me a broken pocket watch when I was 6 and I spent many hours just staring at the innards. My parents gave my a chidrens book about how to set the time “Tommy too-late became Tommy on time!” A few years later my dad’s Benrus self-winder died and he gave me that, and in short order I took it apart!
Q: What was the first watch you ever owned?
The first one I bought with my money was a black plastic Texas Instruments Model 500 LED around Christmas time 1976 at a local department store for about $21.95
Q: What is one piece of advice you have for someone just getting into watches?
Buy what you like before buying as an investment. And yes even a cheap POS can become desireable. Especially if it’s worn or featured in film, online, or on TV. So dont throw it out!
Q: What brands have been getting your attention lately?
Aside from the regular heavyweights featured here: Seagull, Sugess, Tandorio, Pagani Design, Island Watch, Bulova, Steeldive, Swatch, Duxot, Dan Henry, Timex, not because they have necessarily great watches, but they have pretty good ones and or interesting ones.
Q: What is your grail watch and why?
The Casio W-150 Marlin. It was the first watch I felt pride in ownership. It was reasonably priced in 1981 at $39.95 and it was shiny stainless steel, you could wear it swimming because it could be taken down to 100 meters deep, it had “Lithium” written on it like that was important and a tiny swordfish on the bezel!
