Actually Owning a Moonphase Watch?

I'm starting to obsess about a moonphase watch, which leads to a question to those who actually own one: how do you actually manage the moonphase?

A moonphase tracks the moon as long as runs, but if it stops, it doesn't. Presuming you don't wear the watch every day, how do you keep the watch synced to the moon? It's easy enough to set the date when you put on a watch that's not running, but the moonphase seems like not so much. You have to figure you out how many days since the last full moon, set the watch to the full moon and then count the clicks (or so I'm told, as I've never set one). So, do you wear the watch all the time so it never stops, keep it on a winder, set the moon every time you wear it, or just not bother, it's just set willy nilly, and the moonphase is just decorative? I know that I'm obsessive enough that I would want the moonphase to be set correctly, and last option is for heathens (and there are the utter troglodytes who don't even bother to set the date). People take about moonphases often enough, but then nobody talks about what it's like to actually own one. Odd question maybe, but I'm neurotic enough to ask it.

And next question, is it moon phase, or moonphase? In normal English I think moon phase is correct, but when referring to watches I think I see moonphase.

My moonphase watch gets adjusted every time I re-wear the watch. I don’t put it in a winder. It’s not that challenging to set. I find it harder to actually determine which moon phase is current that day…

Mine is on a winder when I’m not wearing it.

Thanks, good to know. And nice watch. I've tried it on and have been tempted. What do you mean by "determine which moon face is current that day"?

Like I’m not sure if the moon is waxing or waning…

I cheat! 🤣 Here is my moon phase watch.

It updates automatically and also has a tide graph.

I'm on Android. I use an app called Lunescape. There are many out there. I've got about ten Moonphase watches. Setting them is more work than a simple date or day date, but oh so worth it.

Unless you need the real moon phase for a hobby or something, no need for it to be correct besides personal neuroses - and at that point it is literally just there as a decoration piece.

Hope to add one someday but won’t be a daily, so fully intend to set time/date and be on my way.

·

You can just make a point of winding it every evening to make sure it never needs adjusting. You know, right before you look out the window to see the moon before you turn into a warewolf! Joking of course. Or am I? ;)

·

Thanks for asking, I've already asked myself that too

·

I reset mine each time that I wear it. The fact that it is a more complex (yet pointless) complication and takes some time to reset can be seen as part of the charm.

📣Are you not entertained? Is this not why you are here?

With the prevalence of cell phones, one could say the same thing about setting the time!

Mine is usually in a winder, however if not it is easy to set, look up on the Internet what it should be and it's as easy as setting the date.

That’s one of many things 😂

I struggle but it’s worth the struggle, I buy watches for

Its calibres and complications. Watch winder can be helpful but I set it usually. Moonphases are lovely the most romantic watches.

Very nice collection 😍 I was looking at the MeisterSinger, including because I wanted a large moon window. What are your thoughts on it?

There are a couple of pros and cons for me:

It is definitely a refined watch, and on a similar level to my Fears Brunswick in execution. All those things which make a watch feel more premium, such as the polishing on the applied indices and the quality of the cut of the hands are present. The matte midnight blue dial sometimes looks a bit flat in photos, but doesn’t look like that at all in person. It is also nice to have such a large moon on the moon phase. Also, at 39mm it is one of the few Mühle watches that would fit my wrist properly.

On the other hand, the strap/band is very nice, but comes attached to a deployant clasp which: (a) seems a little bulky on the underside of the wrist; and (b) tends to dig into my wrist, and occasionally gives a sharp prick (insert joke here) if I catch the edge of the release buttons. I am intending to try it on a Strap Tailor wax leather strap that I have purchased, but I’m actually going to have to go into a shop to get that changed over. That’s because the screw lugs are so tight that I can’t undo them, and have suffered a minor scratch on the lugs already in trying to do so!

I do really like it, overall. It could be said that with the screwed lugs, and the slightly thicker case, the watch comes across as a very very dressy tool watch, rather than an out-and-out dress watch like my Fears. Hopefully once I get it on a strap with a buckle, I’ll wear it more often.

I’ve had a few moonphase watches. It’s my favorite complication. I’ve got a moonphase app to tell me the exact phase and days from full. Setting it isn’t difficult. I don’t wear mine all the time but regularly keep them wound by hand.

For the longest, I wanted a Jaquet Droz moonphase. I like moonphases in classical execution but with pseudo-realistic moon depiction for some reason. Unfortunately, JDs were never correctly priced and hence they've gone out of business for the n-th time. Still don't own one and I think I'm over that yearning. Now I'm in the retrograde and jumping hours phase.

Great thanks! A chunky dress watch sounds very nice 😊

Hey, this got more traction than I thought it would. This is my current moonphase. Today is a new moon. The Yes Watch didn't get much love around here when I posted it, but it amuses me.

@timepiece.pete, that Longines retrograde intrigued me, but alas, it's way too chunky for my wrist. @balaji07, I've had my eye on that triple calendar chronograph for years now, but it keeps going on the back burner. Someday...

@ChronoGuy, that Behrens looks pretty cool. Their watches are much pricier now, but look pretty intriguing. The moonphase I'm currently obsessing about (I've already posted about it) is built on a Behrens module, so I'm just learning about the brand.

They're still there, part of Swatch Group, as ever. If I remember right, they shut down their retail, and now focus exclusively über high end high horology and bespoke pieces.

Sure no prob. Here you go:

1: long press the Lock Screen to customize, select “Customize” and then “Customize Lock Screen”

2: Select your panel with the widgets

3: Add and remove widgets as necessary. Hodinkee’s widget should be there if you have the app.

Check one of my latest posts. I keep mine on track winding everyday. I use an app to adjust the moonphase. I use it in quite a functional way: figure out tides, mark religious events on hijri calendar.
