How do you stop the next purchase or do you?

I tend to buy watches that I have to save for. I do this for a couple of reasons. First off saving provides a purpose for buying the watch. Secondly and the main reason is it keeps me from buying every watch I think I want. It stops the impulse.

Sounds crazy right. I don't want boxes of watches or a bunch of impulse buys I'm going to second guess later. I want a box (maybe one day 2 boxes of watches) that I can manage. One that I feel is well curated by me for me.

So while I'm saving for the next purchase, I'm not buying watches and I use this time to pick the watch I want on my wrist. I can research, locate the watch, try it on and shop for it. I enjoy this process. It works well for me.

Do you have a strategy to control your watch purchases? Or do you just buy?

Now that my watch box is overflowing, I have to be more selective moving forward. Ok who am I kidding, I’m looking for a bigger box. 🤣

I was all set to buy an Oris on eBay. With 15 mins to go I was about to place a bid but I had a sudden epiphany, I don't need it, I just want it. I have enough watches already. So I didn't bid and I stopped watching it.

Now I'm wishing I had bought it! 🙄

If I adopt to your way of buying I'd be buying lots of boxes also.

I could see myself doing to same thing. At the next auction I would over bid from the fear of missing out. 🫣

I guess it better than buying garages for more cars.

I started a watch youtube channel. Yup, that might seem like a contradiction but it's not. Because putting out watch videos has sapped all my excess energy lol. I've noticed my watch buying has slowed way down since then.

But on the plus side, I'm more thoughtful about my purchases. Creating videos and analyzing watches and horology has increased my ability to appreciate each piece at a deliberate pace.

Now, with that said, I just placed an order for a new watchbox so noticed I said slowed down, not stopped altogether lmao.

All my purchases are inexpensive, so I don't have to worry about it. It's like buying a hamburger - if I want one, I'll buy it. 😉

But for a more discerning buyer such as yourself, I can see your strategy being helpful though. 👍 Put a little delayed gratification into it.

I was a newbie during lockdown and exercised zero restraint. The result has been twofold in that I have many watches the more experienced me of today would've probably passed on but I'm also better able to make up my own mind about what I like and tune out the preferences of others.

I'm now buying watches much more thoughtfully and knowledgeably at a price point that often requires a disciplined intention.

Damn, I envy all you that have self control and can call your collections carefully curated. The only strategy I've managed to hold is not go on ebay and buy some old broken rubbish (though to be honest I've maxed out microbrand madness this year) it's been 8 months since I've succumbed (to old broken rubbish) but the itch is starting again. No don't look, oh one little peep won't hurt....

Or you can add a garage to store watches…

I've downsized on cars myself.

How indeed🤣

So many watches, so little time! I'm like you at this point, Craig. I have filled out my collection with some grails (to me, anyway) and am now just saving and being lots more selective about what comes into my collection next. But there is always something on the horizon, even if it changes every day, right???

My recent watch buys have been not so expensive. I have gotten in the habit of trading or selling watches when I get more to offset costs.

Thank you for the encouragement. It's not easy to start from scratch. Considering I don't have any investors or large sums of money to fall back onto. I think I'm doing alright. I take it one step at a time.

I will watch my pennies! And when you start seeing new watch alerts from me, you'll know the dollars have arrived.

I can't wait!!! Best of luck. I'm routing for you.

I don't understand the question 😕🤣

I totally understand. You're not alone. 😂

·

I limit my collection to five watches. If I buy another, one has to go.

·

EASY

set limit on how many watches to own - if you want to buy one, you need to sell one

also.. you got to have approval from your wife too

mostly the latter are pretty effective againts buying a new watch 😅😅

I have a problem 😅

I often spend time stumbling around knowing I want a new watch, I just don't know what watch.

My wife is almost a co-signer. So that strategy won't work for me. 😂

So you went for the information overload. You get so much information that you give up. I never thought about that. I can see how that could work. It takes a lot of time though.

Yep. More or less. For most watches that I wanted to purchase, the excitement fades out after a while, and imagining myself wearing the watch just feels dull after some time. I'm eyeing the Seiko GMT and Seiko cement though, and this technique is not working anymore for those two 😂

That's a sign or the sign. Buy'em and don't look back. That's what I do. No wait. I'm supposed to wait and save. 😂

To answer your question, yes I just received it the cement few days ago. No regrets 😂
