Has Citizen changed the conversation away from the PRX..?

Hands down my most complimented watch! Wore this the other day and three people complimented me on this watch! The fumay blue dial is an absolute stunner. I got excited when I saw Citizen was releasing a “small” seconds version, with a textured dial, and a suped up version of the miyota movement. I am a fan of Citizen (Spider-man Chrono, this watch, and my beloved ORCA dive watch are three of the standouts I own) but I really feel justified with the Tsuyosa line, and the new small seconds version coming out. The watches feel like a new direction for Citizen (beyond eco drive). And c’mon this watch was under 400 bucks! With the new one coming out at around $500. These are great everyday watches. This fumay dial one, wears well on my 7 inch wrist, and is ridiculously comfortable. Don’t get me wrong, I love my PRX, I have a blue sunburst dial on a rubber strap (which is incredible)..but my Citizen intergrated bracelet has kinda stolen the show. Has Citizen changed the conversation?

Citizen is killing nowadays with its Tsuyosa, good value for money indeed!

This is not on my radar. I don’t think the bracelet design is very well matched to the case. The case is sharp and angular while the bracelet is a series of curves. The transition between the two lacks design cohesion.

I have both PRX & Tsuyosa but oh boy! The last one is giving me tons of joy!

I was on the fence with the blue fume dial as I don't like the cyclops (I could remove it) then the blue small seconds looks very tempting, I just hope they release a rubber strap for it (or maybe I could just find one that works)

I think that the answer to the question that you have posed is "no." Tissot and Citizen are aiming these watches at different markets despite their similarities.

·

IMHO the PRX got a wee bit overhyped. Not hating here ✌️

I purchased the blue version about 2 weeks ago. The sunburst effect is quite nice and the light reflexions on the indices are a nice touch (dont expect a sparkle like a Grand Sriko) . Many people compare this version to the PRX but IMO the Citizen looks better. The PRX has large flat surface around the dial where this has been muted for the Citizen which I prefer.

The bracelet is not bad but the clasp could be made of thicker material. As others have said, i would like Citizen to make straps available for this watch.

Definitely a nice watch.

No, I don't think so. I really don't believe that Tissot and Citizen target audiences overlap all that much.

For example, I bought the 35mm quartz PRX (aside from the design) because of its size, it being quartz, as well its weight, or the lack thereof. I almost can't feel that I'm wearing a watch with the PRX.

Also, Tissot is an entry-level brand for Swiss watches under the Swatch umbrella, which appeals to a particular group of buyers.

Citizen's timing is also quite different: The PRX rekindled the retro-style integrated bracelet, and it's quite possible that we are currently hitting the tail end of that trend. I'm certainly not in the market for another watch in that style, and also not in 40mm.

I think it’s definitely released probably the most solid affordable competitor.

What kinda quenched my slight desire for a PRX was wearing my presidential bracelet inside out, which mimicks the light play the PRX’s bracelet has.

Yes! You are correct on your description.

You are kinda right. I never considered the differential from the watch and the bracelet. Only because it is very comfortable and works for me. With that said, I can see your reasoning. Maybe a flat bracelet would look nice or a strap? Whoever designed this watch obviously had a reason for his or her choices. People love this watch and I get complimented every time I wear this, far more than the PRX or any other watch I own, so the design choices had a solid outcome for many.

This looks hot on that strap! I don’t remember this being an option when I purchased mine!?

I am an odd man out on the “cyclops”…I love them! Mainly because I can actually see the date, and also it brings a certain charm to the watch and adds character.

I think that the burden is yours. Has the conversation switched? Is there evidence of that or is Citizen's release just the latest and therefore foremost on your mind?

It is true that they both have integrated bracelets, but has there been some sort of sea change towards the Tsuyosa? Sales figures won't tell us much for a while because the Tsuyosa was not widely released at first unlike the PRX.

When Hodinkee discusses the Tsuyosa they compare it to the Oyster Perpetual. With the dial colors I understand the comparison. When I see the variety of dials on the new releases I think more of the Seiko Presage than a 1970's sports watch. But, that may just be me.

If the burden is mine, then yes, the tsyosa is changing the conversation. You can’t take away what the PRX has done for the watch industry and for our hobby as a whole, I would consider it a disrupter. I know two people who are not enthusiasts or watch collectors, but they love the PRX. These are people who would have never considered buying a watch or being collectors (one of my friends started collecting as a result) if it wasn’t for the PRX. With that said, I believe Citizen has started shifting the conversation because they are doing the “integrated” sports watch better than Tissot at an even more affordable price point. Around $300 you get a watch that is a little bit more “robust”..in my opinion. Yes, it is a Miyota movement, but the PRX has that plastic part in the movement, making it unserviceable in the future. Also, the Citizen is a bit more refined and not as flat as the Tissot. Making it not only a great looking watch, but it feels really good on the wrist. I suppose one could try and make this argument with the Christopher Ward 12,or the Fredrick Constant (as well as others)..but those watches start at over $1,000 up too the $5,000 range. Not $300 like the Tsyosa. Of course this is all subjective, because you are right that, we don’t have sales figures yet. But I do believe that intergrated bands are here to stay. That would be like saying, well, those round shaped watches have run their course, or 20 mm lug width is now passe. In my opinion, intergrated watches look better. The trend is moving away from divers and more towards the more integrated style approach. New younger people are proving that true just by the sheer popularity of the PRX, and the fact that companies are producing more of that youthful sport style.
