Why I love (and hate) homages!

So a funny thing happened to me the other day while wearing my PD seamaster 300 homage watch. A stranger complimented me on it. While it isn’t unusual for me to be complimented on my various watches, this one hit different. I was walking by a storefront talking on the phone and a young man said “that’s a great seamaster” I ignored him. Kept walking. I knew he wasn’t talking to me, after all I wasn’t wearing a seamaster. But then it dawned on me (about 5 seconds later) he was talking to me! I was being rude! So I quickly turned around “thanks man!” You are welcome, He replied, and walked into the store. At that moment I felt like a fraud. After all, I know I am not wearing a seamaster, we all know it isn’t a seamaster. No helium valve, 40mm instead of 42mm, cheap Chinese movement. But man, I really enjoy wearing this watch. Feels great on my 7 inch wrist, looks fantastic. Am I wrong!? For the record, if I wasn’t taken unawares, I would have told him, I would have spilled the beans. I would have done it with pride though. “I paid $120 for this instead of $5,600 isn’t that great!?

Honestly it’s a beautiful looking watch. I think our community tends to talk down on pagani a lot but the thing is not all of us walk around with 5,600 dollars to spare and a 120 dollar watch can be just as good if not better 🙂

Right!? I think so too. Once I realized that no one cares what’s on your wrist…it changed my perspective on our hobby. I started buying what I like. I am not trying to be something I am not.

For a lot of people a true seamaster is unattainable and we will never be able to have one. I see nothing wrong with a homage, it gives you the design you want without the price and it should be acknowledged for what it is.

I just received the Pagani Design PD-5005? The black n orange sandwich dial piece for $60 and it fills that Archer's Omnichron Spymaster vibe really well.

That's a good looking watch! I'm a fan of Pagani Design. Great choice man 🤙🏽

I love homage watches. Purchasing these watches saved me tons of money on repairs and possible maintenance on my higher end watches. I've mirror image all of my Swiss watches with these Chinese Specials.

I've also had a lot of compliments on my homage watches as they have mistakenly thought it was the original. However, I would correct them immediately on the spot and spark up a conversation. And next thing you know they become fans, homage watch enthusiast and more importantly we've made a new friend the old fashion way by organically engaging socially - Not swiping LEFT 😆😂🤣

Check out this Steeldive homage NTTD 🍻👊🏽

After all, a homage is paying respect, publicly, to something we admire and respect. This watch isn’t trying to be a seamaster, it is giving a nod to a timeless classic.

Nice piece! I personally like the idea of having a homage of somthing you own. If your traveling/ or going to the rough side of town or treating it like a beater 🛠️

Smaller, thinner, no HE escape valve... This is even better than a real Seamaster! 😉

Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery isn’t it? The key here is that PD is not saying it’s a Seamaster.

There are so many watches designs that are homages to some other watch in the past.

The AliX watches has allowed me to tip my toes in the hobby and learn about what I like. They typically have sapphire crystals, decent movement and finished well. That plus I don’t have $5600 lying around to get a Seamaster 😀

I just say "thanks, ahh its a homage" if anyone says anything, which they don't !

It kinda is…this PD is really wearable, I must say.
