Your Thoughts on These Cool Calatrava Models?

Patek Philippe introduced a few cool and newer models for the Calatrava line. Recently, I came across the newer Calatrava references 6007G (the one on the left side, in 3 different colors) and 5226G (the one on the right side). I was immediately captured by how trendy the 6007G is. But then a while later, I started feeling that it may be a bit overly trendy. While I still find it quite beautiful, I started feeling it does not look like a typical Patek Philippe. I found the 5226G more balanced, although I think it is still more sporty than what a typical Calatrava would look like in most people's mind. Then, I came across this watch review channel: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wIqntUHaPck This gentleman spoke my minds.. But who knows... it may not necessarily be a bad thing for an ultra high-end brand to explore into a new direction. It would be indeed a good move if the 6007G and the 5226 can bring more younger watch collectors into the Calatrava club! What do you think about these two watches? Do you think Patek Philippe made the right decision to make some of the offering in the Calatrava line look younger and cooler?

I don't think there are many "young collectors" willing to spend $37.000 on watches... Let alone a single watch... Let alone a watch from a fossil company. 🤭

Haha.. we never know.. I think there are indeed many wealthy people out there... If they are not themselves wealthy, some of their parents may be. And in these days, "young" is a subjective term. I am in my 50's, but I still regard myself relatively young! 😘

·

I may have let the fact I really like them cloud my judgement. 😍

·

Classic example of how a date at 3 seriously cheapens the look of a beautiful design - at a glance look like mall watches. 😢

·

Only $37,000?

How does Patek make money selling at this rock-bottom price? 🤣

·

Very cool looking watches but I don't associate them with "original" calatravas from PP.

·

I like how PP seem to have made a concerted effort to modernise the design language over preceding few years. It's always good to see a successful brand not resting on its laurels.

The new 5236P In-Line Perpetual Calandar is another example, and it's insanely good looking!

They do look good, but they perhaps should have been named something else than Calatravas. These are not dress watches, because they're too busy. Even a modern dress watch should look different - look at Moser.

"Sport", or something similar, should have been their name.

Out of ignorance, why is PP a fossil company and which company(ies) alike do you think is not?

I would ride or die with the 6119G over either of these*.

*if I could afford any of them.

·

It's not the 5226, but the 5326 for me please.

A good move for Patek Philippe imo. They have the Nautilus and Aquanaut for young uns with more money and sense and with the more stylish Calatrava would be a good gateway to this demographic to look further into Patek's archive of beautiful watches.

There's only so much you can take of influencers wearing Nautiluses, Aquanauts and Royal Oaks on the red carpet.

The rare times I find a 3 o'clock date window acceptable is when it brings symmetry with a 9 o'clock square/baton index. Still not ideal, but the similar shapes balance the dial at a glance.

Image

However it never looks good as a replacement for big numerals like in these watches. No hopes to have visual symmetry. 🤷

It’s an opinion that is moot from my financial standpoint anyway. If I ever have Patek money I’ll get a Laurent Ferrier or ALS or a Moser one or VC or FP Journe :) Patek has been caught up with by lots of Manufacturers that work harder and make better watches ( PO )

The more I look at the 6007G, the more I feel it looks like a fashion brand watch.. (still beautiful but just does not feel very high-end) However, on the other hand, I do find 5226 quite good looking, although I agree with you that it would look better if there is no date on the dial.

Yes, when I hear the name "Calatrava", I would have something like Reference 5119 or 5196 in mind.

I like this one too, but the color of the dial is a bit too daring for my taste. 😜

Totally agree. I have always been wondering why there are so many totally different designs in a single Calatrava line. Nothing wrong with this, but this is just a bit odd to me. For example, I know the basic design of, say, the Nautilus... and if I like it, I will check out that line. Otherwise, I'll skip it. But for Calatrava, I would not have an idea of what I will see until I check out the offerings in that line. But I guess that's not a big problem though, as there are not too many models in the Calatrava line.

Yes, the 6119 is very beautiful and elegant. It is the one I am planning to get some day, but I would likely pick the Rose Gold version.

Yes, this Seiko looks very nice. The date window works out very well.

I bought the IWC Mark XX two years ago, and I also like how the date window on the Mark XX balances the hour markers on the dial perfectly.

Thanks for your opinion. Among the brands you mentioned, I am not familiar with Laurent Ferrier. I just checked them out and yes, most of their watches are indeed very good looking.

I think you got a good point, but even though Calatrava may no longer be the "ultimate" dress watch, I would still consider Calatrava (the more traditional versions) one of the best options when it comes to luxury dress watch.

I think it would be a big challenge to bridge the gap between a Calatrava and the, say, Nautilus. Given the crazy hype on these PP sport watches, it is next to impossible to be placed on a waiting list for these sport models. I heard that you would need to build a purchase history of six figure in order to be considered for these sport models. I don't even know whether this is an annual purchase expectation or not.

I am planning to get a Calatrava one day, but I do not believe I would be able to establish a viable relationship with the AD to provide me an opportunity to buy the Nautilus. But that's fine.. it is just a watch.. I can go somewhere else to get a sport watch I like.

Absolutely what floats your boat is correct! I do love trad Patek , just a couple brands in the line up for me personally! You still can’t go wrong with a Patek ( Laurent Ferrier was creative director for over 30 years for Patek! )

·

Like the watch but they are extremely overpriced for a standard calatrava with a "cooler" design.

Agree, they are even more expensive than the 6119.

·

I LOVE the 5226g.. a white gold field watch with crappy WR!? What's not to love about this utter frivolity!?

I wouldn't recommend it as a first/only Patek. This demands to be used as an everyday GADA watch. Which means your 'special' watches would need to be quite considerably more special!

·

I think the field watch one is nice, the carbon fibre looking one is a bit yucky

Agree. I also find the 5226G quite good looking as a sportier watch. But the price tags for Patek timepieces are just too high for most people. It is already a bit of a stretch in my budget to get even one. I will go bankrupt if I get more than one! 😂
