Coming around to titanium

Some of you may have heard me mention my aversion to titanium watches. For no other reason than they just feel too light, at least the ones I had tried. I like the heft of steel usually.

Well then I did some posts involving Grand Seiko and @HotWatchChick69 and @Fieldwalker we're all like: "just dooooo it"

Image

At first I was not totally convinced, but of course eventually....

Image

So I finally went window shopping for GS to give it another go. I gotta say, they have a point! At first I thought I was gonna be totally sold on the Omniwatari, but then I tried the Mist Flake....man oh man, what a piece. I also got lucky the AD was super friendly and a fellow watch nerd. He even knew my boss, guess he buys his watches there ha!

The thing I really liked about the titanium GMT was the way it sat on my wrist compared to other watches. Very Seiko-like in the sense it really hugs the wrist. The bracelet is so light it almost feels like aluminum though, so again I would have to wear it for a while to get used to it. But overall, quite impressed. The AD mentioned one of his wealthiest clients (has APs, Pateks to spare) even thinks GS is the next big brand, people are just slowly coming around. Time will tell I guess and I'm sure everyone has their opinions for and against.

Now the real issue is now I am torn. I was sure an Omega was in my future this year. But now I'm thinking maybe a GS would be "wiser" since an SMP will always be there when I want it. But honestly, I just want both and cant decide. What a problem to have right?!

In any case, I'm still months away from pulling the trigger on anything. So I plan to keep doing alot of pondering over wrist shots to try and make up my mind. Que the comments ✔

To be clear though, nothing to worry about here folks. No matter which one I get first the other will follow haha.

I ordered an nice GS I’m still waiting oh yeah it’s titanium too…

Ohhh right it’s a Seiko… 🤫

Dude, that SBGE285 is #1 on my shortlist of watches at the moment! It's perfect in my eyes!

Next thing you know, you'll be down here in San Diego, drinking some cocktails, getting baptized in the One True Church of GS!

It does look pretty church like!!

The SBGE285 wears like a 40mm watch on the wrist. In photo it looks like a big watch but in person definitely much better compact plus the titanium makes it really comfortable. It feels like wearing lighter MM200.

Wanted my first GS to be a Snowflake but when I saw this watch, it really changed my mind too 😅

·

I had the great pleasure of owning this watch (as well as other GS along my journey and it is nothing short of magnificent.

The weight is still enough to let you know you're wearing it and then when you look down at it, it as if the clouds have parted, the sun shines through and angels start to sing

Love the look of these. Totally a GS in Seiko clothing.

I hear you, I think all Seiko fans will admit the bracelets are always a weak point. It's almost become part of their identity haha.

The price is always a good debate however. If you look at something like the SBGE285 and consider it is titanium, then look at the contours, polish and brush, it's apparent that it's a more intensive process to make these than your standard steel watches. The dial assembly is also all done by hand. These folks even grow their own quartz crystals in-house. Whether that is worth the asking price to you or not is subjective, but in my mind these are on par with Swiss brands asking for more or less the same amount of money. Sure their name has Seiko in it, but I do feel it's only a matter of time before they get the same level of recognition from a brand status point of view.

That said, if it's not for you still, there are many good options out there. You don't need to like a brand. Trying to force it sometimes just ends up pulling you further away.

Sounds like you really loved this piece! If I may ask, why did you end up letting it go?

Yes I did and only sold to fund the next one - it’s a sickness, lol

·

You are starting to get into deep water my friend LOL......I too like the GS's and have the 'Snowflake" dial. but also enjoy my Omegas...so where does it stop......? LOL but what fun

Bit confused by the small Asian wrist? they are for sale all over the world

is like saying a Rolex doesn't have enough chocolate in it 😜

·

I own three titanium watches so far. My 1999 vintage Breitling Areospace is my go to watch typically, because of its ultra low profile and ultra light weight. After wearing it, everything else feels like I am wearing a lead weight. The Pelagos

is a bit heavier, but still comfortable. The ORIS Aquis chrono is just absolutely too crazy big. I only wear it in the summer with a short sleeve shirt. I would only buy titanium if they made everything I liked in that material.

·

I’m super torn right now - possibly going for another high end seiko …or a maybe low end 9F quartz GS…?

Need neither but want both and I’m in Tokyo for another several days 🙄

Does it not make more sense for @HotWatchChick69 and I to go to Tokyo instead of San Diego? I mean the watch prices in Japan are nuts. Can you sneak me in your luggage?

When you go shopping send some JDM pics will ya!

Nice collection. I have not tried a Pelagos, but of all the Tudors it's the only one I think I could go for because the square markers match the hour hand.

I'll be honest though, since I posted this I'm back to obsessing about the Omiwatari.

·

As a tourist here you buy tax free and it’s probably the highest concentration of high end watch shops in the world. Just bonkers

Nicest bathroom ever, in whole world, in Wako Grand Seiko Salon.

How about finding every rare model and trying them on?

How about a custom bespoke grand seiko you design:

How about Michelin Starred Ramen, for real:

Yes, it’s fun 🤩😉

Hi, you need to use reply if you want people to see the reply.

Yes I've heard of JDM but your original post doesn't mention JDM models it's all encompassing on GS.

Then in your reply you answer you own question. That the Chinese Market dictates large dials. And they are the dominant market.

GS cases range from 36mm up which is hardly Godzilla sized is it?

The chocolate comment is to highlight in a humerous way the obserdity of the racial stereotyping you made that Asian watches should be small because Asians have small wrists.

So yes it was intentionally a stupid comment to call out another stupid comment.

You really want to like the brand, yet don't like anything about it?

·

Skx007, 009 & sarb033 are not JDM only, they werr globally available, made in Japan.

Seiko & grand seiko are 2 different things.

You did not specify size, power meter location, sports type or price range.

You stated GS make Godzilla watches, that are 2 big, incomplete & cringe.

And that's simply incorrect.

Price is also subjective, especially for the spring drive models. As the tech is unique.

Be specific if you have a specific issue.

·

https://www.grand-seiko.com/uk-en/collections/sport/s6

These GS sports start at 39mm, SD is 40.5mm but they don't do power on the back in the sports range yet. But it's quite subtle.

Try them..?

·

Or as you say in your other posts, to other people, if your not interested why are you commenting.

You came into someone else's GS post, just to hate on it.

If your going to be purposely provocative and antagonistic expect a counter argument or 2.

Or do you just go through life expecting people to agree with everything you say, no matter what you say & where, it's disrespectful & rude.

·

Point out the constructive parts?

Or make more personal attacks you decide?

So far we have had, stupid, dumb fan boy, dumb again, and Ive been hurt.

Care to carry on?

·

So just change the strap, the case, the dials & prices. Then you will consider it 👍

Another valid & coherent argument.

Well done 👏
