What will your first Grand Seiko be?

Since 2017 i have been trying grand seiko but its now 2023 and still undecided. Prices are keep getting higher is another factor why i loose my interest and too many new models hard to decide. I know that the GS has the best finishing and nice movement. But does this factor justify their prices ranges 5,000 usd up up???

Im personally not into GS but try them on. That's how you'll find the right one.

·

Shunbun, or the sbgm221

·

My first was,a quartz 44gs black dial,my friend go pre owned do a bit of digging,I pay seiko prospexs prices for my Grand seikos or not much more, there's some absolute bargains, obviously depending on what you want 👌

·

I can't ever see myself spending that sort of money on a battery powered watch. I love the Spring Drive and the gorgeous dials, but I won't be buying one (unless I win the lottery).

·

Hopefully next year:

The Bulova Accutron DNA copper.😉

I’m the same as you. I’ve tried on so many different GS. I like lots of different dials in pictures but still haven’t found the one I MJST have yet.

I’ve decided I’d want a spring drive movement, just to be different to my others. One thing the bracelets don’t help. They feel cheap and lack finesse of similar priced bracelets. My personal favourites are the Jubilee and the the new Speedmaster bracelets.

As opposed to a coiled spring?

the 9f movement is amazing, hand assembled in the seikosha studio, there is more care and attention to the 9f movement than most automatic movements. They grow and select the most stable quartz crystals, completely in house made. I would take a 9f over any off the shelf machine made auto

My gs bracelets are far nicer than what came on my seamaster...

Yep the seamaster bracelet is horrible. I got my SMP on rubber 😅

You're right. But I can't pay GS money for a battery powered watch.

Each to there own, I personally think the 9f is worth every penny, I own 2. There's not many watch brands I would buy multiple of but Grand Seiko does it for me

·

I'm not one for overpriced flex watches but I must admit the whirlpool is the only absurdly expensive watch on my otherwise reasonable "grail watch" list. The Shunbun looks incredible too.

If I ever was to shop in that $10k price range, GS is the only brand I would consider because their finishing and movements are on another level.

·

Paying for a GS and what you think its worth are things that will be influenced by your idea of luxury and attainability.

Ever since GS became it's own company separate to Seiko it's prices has gone up, but also its profile and desirability on a global scale too.

For me, if I'm looking at a watch that isn't obtainable due to price or scarcity in the boutique, then I look on the seconds market or vintage to get something similar.

Spring drive is a little unique so maybe doesn't apply to the above but I think you can still find some good examples out there that won't break the bank.

·

If I were to dive into the GS world, it's hard to ignore their stunning dials! While I've been drawn to other brands in that price range, the Hi-Beat 'White Birch' and 'Green Bircher' are definitely on my radar

SUSFU303

My first GS was the Snowflake. Springdrive that gains 0.1 of a second per day.

Image

My second GS was the SBGN003 9F86 quartz GMT. Gains less than 1 second…a year!

Image

My third GS is TBD, but I’m aiming for a movement trifecta, so most likely a mechanical/auto winder. The new, soon to be released SBGW299 has my attention…

Wow 3 nice gs collection. Thanks for sharing. 😊

·

I went with a pre owned 9F model, SBGX263. Hasn’t gained or lost a second in the last month and finishing is incredible. Fits in every situation. Love it!

White birch spring drive. Never really cared for GS until trying that one on.

I am on the fence for GS for about 5-6 years now. You can't deny the quality of finish and dials ( hands down best in their price segment and even above ) but there are certain elements that prevent me from buying one, price increases don't help either. Mainly my problems are:

  • all of them ( sport, dress, chrono, daily ... ) have ( too ) same design, meaning dauphine hands ( except diver series which is even worse ). They need to differentiate a bit the design language as now I see them all the same and if we remove the dial equation they are quite boring and "soulless/sterile"

  • preety much all of them have shitty/sub par bracelets for this price segment ( improving but still not there )

  • majority of them are too thick for complications they offer ( new chrono is over 15mm, same/simmilar for GMTs )

Until they don't address these things I will be out of purchase despite acknowledging their supperior quality.

This is the first GS I bought, the SBGX341. I recently sold it, I just never really bonded with it. At the end the day I think it was the angular lugs that ultimately turned me off from the watch.

·

I can't afford a #grandseiko yet

My first was the SBGA413 Shunbun quickly followed by the Hi-Beat SLGH005 White Birch. The Shunbun was my gateway drug into GS. I ended up with 3 in the span of 3-4 months. 🤣😅🙈💸💸

Shunbun or Birch? I know both is a nice choice, but I am deciding between the two and only going to pick one atm.

I mean the White Birch won the GPHG best men’s watch 2021 beating out all the Swiss competition. I would go for the White Birch. It’s stunning man.

There's really no wrong answer...as long as it's a Spring Drive.
