The Perfect 4-Watch Collection Doesn’t Exi…

That’s it, y’all, I’m done. I’m retiring. No more watch purchases.

Made a few big changes to the collection to get here; I traded out my Speedy for the BB54 and traded the BB Pro for the OP Date.

While I realize this might not be everyone’s cup of tea, for me, this collection feels oddly satisfying and balanced to me. There’s a formal dress watch, casual dress watch, dressy sport watch, and casual sport watch, yet at the same time any could be worn in nearly any setting.

And the sizing! Ooo the sizing. All sub-38mm. 19mm lug width on the Tank, Date, and Explorer so I can swap straps all day.

Please pardon the gushing and thanks for coming to my TED talk, I just don’t have too many friends or colleagues who would “get” what I’m experiencing right now. Has anyone had this moment? Am I being delusional? What would everyone else’s perfect 4-watch collection look like?

Amazing 4 watch collection. One day I might get there.

·

This is a really fantastically balanced collection. Nicely done!

·

Great collection. I think it’s perfect, would love something like that. You could have stopped with just the Explorer and the DateJust though.

·

Not 💯 my cup of tea but Damn that’s a sexy collection. I’m a big fan of the 1-4 high end watch collection. Quality over quantity is my jam.

Explorer ll Polar

BB58 Blue dial

Speedy

Datejust 41 fluted, black dial, jubilee

im a fan of these propotions as well. Got Explorer, BB54 and Santos Medium. Best propotions 35-37mm for daily wear and comfort (+ got small wrist).

As my 4th i would get a GS SBGW289/91/93 (they are 36.5mm) or DJ36 (proly fluted+jubilee coz otherwise too similar to my explorer). Honestly, more towards the GS and would rather have different brands in the collection.

PS. but im trying to keep 3 watch collection only, lets see how long i can keep it going :D

So you say now. If you are a died in the wool watch nut, something will come along in the future that just lights your board (old architecture school expression) and you have to have it.

Never say never!

Very nice! May I ask what watch case this is in?

It’s from Scatola del Tempo. Beautiful, well-made case with the only drawback being that the lid doesn’t stay open when it’s on a level surface 😩

Great collection as well! The Santos is beautiful. I was seriously looking at the SBGW291 and had a 231, but the proportions of the Rolex Date were just perfect with 34mm case and long lugs with a 19mm width. Case size on the 231 felt a little big for how classic and dressy the dial is and when considering the 291, I got super obsessive and wanted something between the case sizes of the Tank and Explorer, but with the same lug width. Also initially wanted all different brands represented, but again, the Date was exactly what I was looking for regarding design and dimensions. Also doesn’t hurt that it’s a birth-year vintage/neo-vintage piece 🙂

Done until you realize that a 39mm Speedy Reduced would fit that collection really well. LOL

If Omega stopped playing around and made a 39mm Speedy Pro or SMP 300m I might come out of retirement 🤔

·

Will 38mm do?

Lovely what you did there. I think I would have my 4 watch collection like follows: a Cartier Santos, a Rolex Milgauss, a AP Royal Oak and a Rolex GMT Master 2 with the Pepsi bezel

·

Wow. This is the exact collection I’m working towards! I’m interested in different Datejust and Tank models, but same 4 watches.

·

Phenomenal. To be honest just the explorer and the tank is all you need!..

The BB54 is a great third choice though.

Rather than the Date you have id get either: a datejust 36 black dial jubilee with hidden clasp; or a green OP 36.

You don't ever stop looking, you just slow down!
