Cartier Santos or Santos Dumont?

Alright Crunchers, I’m years away from this purchase but I’ve been scratching my head about which one I want! I love them both for different reasons. Which one would you pick? Which should I go for and wear every day? Can the Dumont be dressed down?

For reference- I dress very casually every day, typically jeans/chinos and a t-shirt. I dress business casual for work.

Pictured are the specific references I’d like (dream) to get!

the all stainless steel with bracelet white dial without hesitation

I don’t have a first hand experience with the dumont, love it but passed on it and went for the santos M. I love the all black version of the dumont tho! The regular santos is all I needed. You can dress it up with its leather strap and totally change the look, but even on the bracelet it can get pretty classy!

You really just can’t go wrong with the regular Santos on a bracelet..

The Dumont is the nicer looking watch for my tastes but it's definitely not a watch you'd wear every day. You can dress it down if that's what it takes to wear it frequently. Personally, I wouldn't do that as it's beauty is all about it's elegance as a dress watch.

For every day use you should opt for the Santos which absolutely can be dressed down & looks great with rubber, sailcloth straps. I'd definitely be wearing the Santos off the bracelet were I wearing it to work etc. The bracelet gets scratches like no other watch I've owned.

·

For me personally I think I’d go santos in steel or two tone

·

I like the black one on a strap. Is that the Dumont? Anyway, I’d choose that one. Loads of people have the Santos, which is a great watch, but the Dumont is exceptional and different.

Yes that’s the Dumont with a black lacquered dial! Isn’t it beautiful?

Ditto, it's a seriously cool looking dress watch. Very classy & no bling.

I like it MUCH more than the Santos.

·

Dunno which is which, but I'd go for the white dial as it's closer to the original. All are lovely tho, it's splitting hairs tbh 😍

Cartier have an incredible knack of wowing & horrifying me with their watches. I can look at a Santos, a Dumont, a Tank, Pasha etc & be blown away by their beauty. Only to look at another model from the same collection & be utterly appalled at how ugly it looks.

The black dialed Dumont you've posted is absolutely one of their best.

·

Santos for sure if it is an everyday watch and even if it's not. I find it more versatile and sporty but it dresses up well too. The crown on the Dumont stands out too much. I wear my Santos mostly on rubber.

DUMONT

I aborted a post I was writing yesterday on my revelation that there was a good-looking Santos and the other one with the Erector set bracelet and crown with bezel corners reminiscent of those on an automotive body panel. The awful de Cartier looks like an H.R. Giger nightmare.

The Dumont merely has silly bezel screws and that protruding ornate jeweled crown, historical throwbacks. It is more easily forgiven. The bezel is a rational shape. There is no extraneous dial text or second hand to make sure everyone knows that it's an automatic!

And only the Dumont comes in a good size.

·

I prefer the look of the Dumont. Thinner bezel is less susceptible to scratches too...

·

Santos. White dial. Bracelet. Classic and elegant. You cannot go wrong with that.

·

Dumont is more elegant with its thinner bezel, Santos is sporty.

Personally would pick the Dumont because Cartier to me is quintessentially dress. A neo-vintage two tone Santos is quite the looker though

·

I used to say the Santos but the DM is actually growing on me as time goes on

·

IMO Santos. I really want one too. Considering the classic with blue hands like you have pictured, or that two-toned with gold. There is just something about the two-tone that makes me want it more. The dressier one is sweet looking but I'd live in fear of knocking off the jeweled crown

·

I've owned multiple Cartier's through out the years and you can't go wrong with either choice. I love the Santos Dumont black dial so that would be my choice. I almost bought it.

·

I'd get the Dumont. In fact, I want that exact black lacquer variant but my local Cartier shops told me that this isn't going to happen 😉 then I went online and realised why... not many seem to be made. The steel Santos medium is quite nice as well.

·

I love dumont more 😊

·

I was really close to pulling the trigger on the Santos medium a few times. It looks great on paper and in reviews. But somehow the printed dial is a real let down in person and always prevented me from going forward. Just make sure you handle the watch in person before taking the plunge. You'll know when you have it on whether it sets your soul ablaze or not.

·

If I’m not mistaken the new santos with stainless steel strap is quick release and *Comes * with a leather strap… so two watches in one! Problem solved! 😅

·

Santos, as I can’t get pass that sharp crown stone that resembles a human part of our bodies 😅

·

I love the Black one. But can’t go wrong (ever) with the medium with white dial #cartier santos
