Review: The unrealness of the Tissot PRX Powermatic 80

Image

After a few months with two of these watches (more about that later) it's time to share my thoughts about this incredible watch. There, I said it. That's it. You can go back scrolling through Chrono24...

For those who want to know a bit more about this Tissot PRX Powermatic 80, read on. It's not going to be a very extensive review, since this is a watch launched in july 2021 and there are a ton of reviews on YouTube and other watch based online platforms. What they (almost) all have in common is that they rave about the quality/price ratio. And I can confirm that it's true; the ratio is very good. The finishing, design and attention to detail you'll find on this watch is normally reserved for the more pricier segment.

I just love the seventies design (the original was designed in 1978). And as soon as I saw this watch I knew it was only a matter of time before I would buy one. For me it's the integrated bracelet (one of the best I ever saw and felt), the wafer dial and the simple design that got to me. The overall satin brushed steel (except for the bezel and in between the lugs of the bracelet) gives it just enough oompf to flash it. So I ordered the green dial and then had to wait a few months, since the delivery address was abroad. Whilst on holiday, the shop on the cruise ship I was on had one automatic watch: a black Tissot PRX Powermatic 80... Without the VAT... I couldn't resist and so now I have two of the same models. Do I care? No, I don't. The dark green is still my favourite, but I am happy wearing the black one when it matches my outfit.

The 80 hours of power reserve, the exhibition caseback, the butterfly clasp on the bracelet, the weight, the anti-magnetic hairspring, it all feels and works perfect and makes this watch easily my everyday one.

Is there nothing to complain? Of course there is, we are OCD nerds, remember?! No micro adjustments on the bracelet and the poor performance with Luminova are noticeable, but not enough for me to spoil the experience.

This model is a big hit for Tissot and there are now several models, including two chronographs. I would buy one, if I were you...

These tick a lot of boxes. Good movement with power reserve. The integrated bracelet look and an interesting dial.

Tried them on a few times and haven't said "wow I want one" but they are great looking watches.

·

Agree with you. I got the blue dial.

Great looking design but wears terribly too heavy. Wore mine once and sold it. Beautiful dial though.

Classic watch,classic design.

·

Definitely a possibility in the future!

The bracelet and case looks .. sharp edged?  Does it ever feel sharp on wrist bending and other movements?

No, it doesn't! I think that is also the appeal for me; it looks edged and sharp, but feels really comfortable.

Really like both of the these and the realistic review is appreciated. Would love to see that green dial on a Delugs leather or suede.

What is your wrist size? I can’t decide between the 35mm and the 40mm.

I have a 17 cm. wrist, and the 40 mm. is very comfortable on that.

I too have a 17cm (or 6.5 inch) wrist and no complaints with the 40mm whatsover. Well, only one minor gripe: I had to remove 5 links instead of an even number of links like 4 or 6 so the dial doesn't fall exactly at the very center of my wrist. It's not noticeable by any means and I'm only reminded of it from time to time when I study it intensely. Not a real issue by any stretch of the imagination. I'll get over it. I'm very happy with the purchase.

If it's any consolation - I've got a 17cm wrist as well, I removed 4 links (as I thought it'd be a bit tight with 5 removed) and it still looks a bit off center to me. I attribute it mostly to the case protruding slightly at the bottom (they faked a bit the thinness of the watch), which doesn't allow the lugs to lie on the wrist, but rather hover a bit above it. That's my main issue with the PRX, but it took me a while to figure it out. :-)

That being said - at this price point I can't imagine a better watch!

Not at all. The bracelet feels great overall, sans the micro-adjustments - you'll be pretty lucky to get an exact fit with it. I've opted to keep mine a bit loose because of this. Mine is also squeaking a bit when I move my wrist faster, but it's not a huge deal. At this price point really good bracelets are kind of hard to come by.

Great looking design but wears terribly too heavy. Wore mine once and sold it. Beautiful dial though.

I used to wear a titanium quartz watch (Candino Elegance 36mm) and an Apple Watch before getting the PRX, so I can certainly relate. But I did get used to the weight after a couple of days. Seems to me that steel watches with steel bracelets are always going to be relatively heavy.

I'm still wondering why titanium is not used more often these days.

19cm wrist and the PRX was a terrible disappointment. Wears large, long and top heavy. And a butterfly clasp? Meh.

you can remove the first small links, I have the same wrist size as yours. I had a hard time micro-adjusting the strap
