A surprise encounter…

Living on an island in the Atlantic means that there are always lots of people visiting for a period of time. Sometimes just for the holiday week, sometimes people that stay for longer. Gran Canaria is a very transient place, especially the south of the island, were we live. That means that we ‘know’ a lot of people that are here for periods of time. One of those people is George. It’s not his real name, but anonymity is key here… I’ve known George for several years and he is always visiting for a few weeks and then moving on to the next place, being happily retired. Two days ago we met by chance in one of the bars here and started chatting. I never noticed a watch on him before, but this one was hard to miss… In disbelief I put my glasses on (I’m hopeless without them these days…), grabbed his wrist and my jaw dropped to the floor.

“WTF dude!? Since when do you have an PP Nautilus!?” -“Oh, you noticed? Nobody notices, you know. Yes, well, I uhm, sort of like, it’s also an investment, sort of, three years ago…”

“What the reference number of this one?”

-“Oh, I don’t know, I just like the watch…”

“Do you have more watches?”

-“Ah well, yes I have a few.”

“Tell me! Let me guess, probably an AP Royal Oak. Hahahahahahahaha!”

-“Yes! How did you know?”

(By this point I made him so uncomfortable, it was really embarrassing… But the two Dark & Stormy’s took over and I was unstoppable.)

“Peter, show him your watch! Look, this is a British brand, from Bristol! Really nice heritage and lot’s of cool designs!”

Needless to say I was soon geeking out, but quickly found out that George likes watches, but not to the same extend as I do… We talked about how safe it was to wear watches like that in London and how here nobody cares and you can wear it safely. Anyway, after a few more drinks we went to the karaoke bar and had a wonderful time. Every now and again I was glancing at his wrist and smiling. Old George and his Patek Philippe Nautilus 5726a-001. Who knew!

(Sorry for the bad quality pictures, the lighting in the bar was not made to photograph watches…)

I hate when I find out someone is into watches only soon after to find out they are not as into them as I am. But it’s all good that’s what WatchCrunch is for. It’s like having a friend that you can talk watches 24hrs with and will never tell you to stop 😅✌️😉

Haha the classic case of finding someone who has a shared interest only to learn that they are a casual enjoyed whilst you are deranged

·

I don't wanna be a downer but the watch is fake 😅

Idk I feel like he should have told you that.

·

It is fake! 🤣🥂🍾

·

The watch looks a bit dodgy to me. 😅

Ok, enlighten me! Why do you think it's fake?

Everything, it’s a very low quality fake Patek. The dial colour is off, that could be due to the lightin. But the lines on the dial is way too thick and big. The case polishing is wrong. The bazel is weird.

I wonder what’s the sun is doing there, sun phase? 😅

No wonder why George seem embarrassed when you ask

This is my 5726 with leather strap for comparison.

Thank you for this. For me, buying a fake watch is so foreign and unbelievable that I am very gullible. Why?!

Well it's not your fault at all. Instead, it really highlights that you have a good character. Your friend on the other hand is not the greatest guy it seems 😅 (Well I dont know him but very unnecessary to lie about a fake watch being real)

Thank you, but I don't think less of him. It all makes sense now; he said he was going to spend Christmas in Thailand. In Phuket... Ah well, lesson learned.

·

That’s sad to hear, considering I am Thai 😅.

However I can assure you that all my watches are real, haha, and wearing expensive watches in Thailand (with common sense) is much safe than in many Euoprean cities.

·

Wow…. I bet you can’t wait to see him again 😂

“George, the Patek Philippe AD sold you a fake! You should report them…!”

·

Wow, this was a roller coaster of a thread!
