Discussion: what’s your opinion about Tag Heuer and vintage Heuer? + comparing them to divers from omega and rolex

I’ll try to make it as short as possible, last month I went on a holiday to Dubai, in one of their malls I visited a Tag Heuer boutique to see if there is anything to their watches, someone I trust told me a while ago that their watches are more name than quality and I wanted to see if there is anything to it, overall I wasn’t impressed, nice divers for absurd prices, the vintage inspired watches look good but not really the best for the price, so I want to know opinion about this brand, thank you in advance for commentMing 😁

also how would you compare tag divers like the aquaracer to other other divers from competitors (omega seamaster for instance or Rolex submariner on the higher end)?

attached: some of my favourite watches from them

I think they get a lot of grief from the watch community because of some silly things.

I don't care what material the movement holder is made from, I don't care that they made cheaper "mall watches" in the 80s, and I don't care about resale value.

All three models you posted look good, and after having handled an Aquaracer, I kind of want one.

I kind of agree with you, I don’t care about the points you mentioned and I agree that their watches look brilliant, i might get the red Chronograph I posted on the second hand market for a more reasonable price

The watches you posted above are beautiful, quality watches. My thing with Tag Heuer is that they are over-priced. I will use my favorite example to illustrate:

These watches are the same size with the same water resistance, and have similarly spec’d movements, with the Longines winning out.

The Tag costs 40% more.

Ditto on the Aquaracer

·

I have two of them, an old one from 1986 and a 2020 Aquaracer. I love them, but I would never pay MSRP, and I didn't.

·

I have the Carrera (and a number of other TAG’s) and it’s a great watch. Don’t get sucked into the MSRP debate. Lots of people bag TAG saying they are over priced, but you can use the same argument against plenty of brands.

The truth is TAG does make good quality watches, they will stand the test of time and a watch like the Carrera will also hold its value.

I bought a Carrera around 20years ago and that watch is still selling in the 2nd market today for the same price I purchased it for. That won’t happen with the Longines, even though it’s a great watch.

I gave the same advice in another TAG thread yesterday, just buy it at the right time and you can get yourself a nice discount.

nearly 20 years ago I saw a Monaco in a jewelry store (while shopping for an engagement ring) and it was the first time I’d seen a watch that actually made me contemplate someday buying a luxury watch.  I still don’t own a Monaco, but still do admire that timepiece.

Bought an Aquaracer for my dad and almost didn’t give it to him as I liked it so much. I think the brand is still affected by the movement controversy but their current generation of watches are stupendous.

·

It's an amazing brand with long history and excellent pedigree in the watch game. But they've been painted really thick with the "Mall Watch" stigma over the last decade or so. I really do like alot of their models, but I think their retail prices are too high, specifically in the finishing department. Their bracelets, straps, bezels etc..still feel light & "cheap" to me personally.

That being said, I want them to do well and would like to own a tag one day.

·

I love the Monaco and have done for years before I started collecting. I will buy one at some point.

But my perception of the brand is poor and I do regard them mostly as a mall watch ( because they are ever present there) and overpriced. No doubt some gems amongst their vintage stuff and I am definitely not a hater but equally not much interest in them!

·

Simply put I am not a fan of and don’t pay MSRP for literally anything.
There are many sources to avoid paying full price for a watch or most anything.
That said I like Tag and are any watches we buy that are higher end truly worth MSRP?

I believe Tag Heuer watches are of good quality and build but the prices they typically sell for are not justified. I personally associate Tag with a certain corporate greed that I cannot justify openly it just feels that the LVMH group is basically trying to suck every penny they can get their hands on without caring or giving back to the community. I see Tag more like a fashion brand than a watch brand to be honest..

That’s basically where I stand, thank you for replying! 😁

Thank you for replying! Would love to see a photo of your tag, thank you for your advice and point of view as well 😁

·

Damn that’s a great looking watch!

·

May I ask what’s the price on that one? also what’s the ref number?

·

Does it have a bracelet extension in the clasp?

·

Thanks mate although from past experience with tag ADs I wouldn’t say they give discounts easily

·

The circular lines look brilliant, great dial indeed, is it also a sunburst dial?

·

Great looking dial, thank you

·

Too bad but I guess for this type of watch it’s suitable, thank you for showing me

·

By the way just found this is a blue dial version of this reference, possibly will get on my buy list, did you see it?

They're a storied brand. The Heuer name name goes way back and they made some amazing movements. They get criticized for some of their marketing. As far as quality, I think they are built pretty robustly. At least that's my impression of the Formula 1. The Carrera is daintier given it's dress aesthetics. I have special place in my heart for TAG. It was my first entry into the "luxury" market for watches and my Formula 1 was gifted to me by my wife.

sorry for the late response mate, any chance you can share your wrist size?

I'm a member of the small wrist gang. 6-1/4" wrist.

Here's a different shot of the formula 1.

·

Yes I agree

·

The modern Tags I’m not interested in anymore but the re-issue Heuer models I like ! I don’t like they do it as a limited edition and then they all sell out! They know what we want but keep on making stuff that we don’t ! 😤

·

I think if they got rid of their quartz models and streamlined some older offerings then they could start leaning heavily into the vintage and what made them great during the 60's

·

So I purchased this Tag Huer 1000 meters quartz Professional when it was first released in 1984-85 and it's been virtually trouble free for almost 40 years now. I did have an issue with the crown not screwing down all the way a little while back but that was after 38 years of ware and tear. As you can see it's a bit banged up hear and there, but to my eye this watch is just great. It's got a great vintage look and feel to it and it's supper comfortable on the wrist. I'm not sure what caliber ETA movement they put in this watch, but it's a trooper, just keeps on keeping on.
