First luxury watch purchase

I am still probably 2-3 years away from my first watch between 5,000-10,000USD. I want to pay off my student loans and celebrate that achievement.

I already have a marathon dive watch, g shock and orient dress watch.

The brands I am leaning towards include Rolex, Omega, Zenith, and Grand Seiko.

The top watches for each would be the following.

Rolex - GMT Master 2 Batman Jubilee/ 36MM Blue Date just with fluted bezel and jubilee.

Omega - Aqua Terra 41MM Grey with Blue markers, or 38MM with white dial grey markers.

Zenith - El Primero Chronomaster Original 38mm on the blue strap, El Primero A3817 or Defy 21 on bright blue strap

Grand Seiko - SLGH005G or SLGA019

What would you pick and why?

That is a great goal Brandon. After your loans, will your have your housing and investing squared away? I personally would not look at a 10K purchase before that was settled. Moving on to the watches….

The two Rolex models are awesome, but are fairly well sought after and may be hard to come by without a well established relationship.

Regarding the other watches chosen; GS, Zenith, and Omega for me, in that order. You will not go wrong with any of the picks, they are all great selections.

Batman because you’re a magician if you can get one at retail and if you ever fall out of love with it you can sell it for a profit

Thanks for the advice! Yes this would be fun money since all of the rest is squared away with housing covered and investments maxed out

Thankfully I don't plan on selling any of these watches but that is a pro with any Rolex

For me personally, I would pick the A3817. The case design is iconic and the 3 different color registers are simply beautiful. Besides, Zenith's chronographs are among the best out there.

·

I love the Omega AT as it will become your everyday watch

·

Just get Rolex steel sports, you can't go wrong, try not to pay above retail... I've paid retail for all 4 of mine, you just gotta get the AD to like you.. .

Good thing I'm likeable, or so my wife says😂

Those are all great choices. I would mention though, you’re quite likely to change that list over the next few years. I know that what I would buy with $10k has changed several times in the last 2 years.

Batman bc it’s Batman! 😂🤙🎯

·

Omega, all day long.

·

Omega Aqua Terra

What changed/ did change for you taste wise?

·

They're all good watches ofc. Personally, I'd go for the Zenith Chronomaster. I think it's the best looking of the bunch and more off the beaten path. But looking at your list and seeing how different the watches on it are, I think it's a good thing you still got a good bit of time to really make up your mind 👍🏻

Mostly just finding out about watches I’d never seen before. 2 years ago I would have bought a Sub with $10k. But when I first saw the Cartier Santos, that became what I wanted. I’ve swung back towards tool watches, so I’d probably get an Explorer 2 now. Which is funny, because that’s a watch I disliked 2 years ago.

One thing that changed is that some watches I didn’t originally appreciate, I’ve come to like. Sinn divers have grown on me, and the hands on them used to really bother me. I didn’t like to steel bezel on the Explorer2 at first, but now I really do.

I don’t know if everybody is like this, but my tastes keep changing. Most watches I either like or don’t and that doesn’t change. But ask me what one watch I want at a specific price point…well that keeps changing.

Anyway, enjoy the ride.

I would go AT or grand seiko if wanting a versatile everyday watch. DJ 36 if you dont mind the bling factor

·

If you can save up for at least a rolex, and if the waitlist allows you, go for it. But omega iwc or cartier are no slackers if you have the funds and opportunity. Just be sure you get what you really like

What a great plan! 👌 Great way to celebrate a landmark like that too!

When I was buying my big "well-done-Paul" watch, I spent about 2 years using instagram to work out what I wanted. I created a collection and every watch I liked I added to it. After two years there were some pretty clear trends in what I was looking for. Funnily enough, the blue dial DateJust and Batman were both high on my list! So was the IWC Annual Calendar blue dial - which I hadn't realised was so expensive and massive; a disappointing realisation.

Whatever you go for, try to pick something you think will be timeless to your likes and dislikes. That was an important factor for me, and nearly 5 years later I still feel I made the right choice.

I ended up getting the GMT Master II Batman

If you want to get a Rolex by the way - you have a great story. Start now, with an AD. Sell your story, they'll sell you the Rolex. Just takes time, and a genuine connection which you can build with your achievement.

·

Thanks everyone for the feedback! I am not surprised that everyone had different opinions, that is what makes this hobby fun!

·

Grand seiko for me and to put it bluntly I want one😂
