SOTC update - Sell one or break the rule?

With the latest addition of Santos (NWA here), I either have to sell one of them or change my rule.

My rule was to keep my core collection to 5+1 based on situational categories (excluding watches gifted or inherited and those that I can’t be bothered with selling.)

5 categories are;

Dress: Reverso

Work - Nice Weather: Master Geographic

Work - Summer/Rain: Polaris

Mountain - No Snow: Explorer 2

Mountain - Snow: Sinn EZM3

And +1 is just for fun, meant to be replaced when no longer fun, which is currently occupied with SMP Seaweed. I needed this +1 otherwise my collection would be too serious and boring.

If I’m ever to let go of any of them, it has to be either Polaris or SMP.

But Santos doesn’t fill either of the situations.

So I need to invent one additional category.

Maybe “Dress - Summer/Rain”?

I bought it because I don’t like wearing Reverso when hot or raining.

Yeah, that works😁

Why do I have a rule if it’s only there to be broken? Well by defining the situation a watch is to be used, I at least think twice before buying a watch.

Actually I was thinking about buying a pink gold dress watch with leather straps but thought better of that because the situation this watch is used for will completely overlap with Reverso, which doesn’t get enough wrist time without a competition. So I’m not going to do it until I’m ready to part with Reverso or my work start demanding formal attire more often.

So I spent far less and got a watch that can enjoy modest wrist time😉

Thanks for accompanying me through my justification process. I know deep down this is all nonsense. I’m an addict.

What a wonderful problem to have😀 There are soo many other situations that would justify the Santos, ‘coffee on a lazy sunday’ would be my pick☕️

·

I would just change the rule: Total + 1

·

I used to have a pretty strict one in, one out and that was at six watches. I quickly realized it was foolish to stick to a self-imposed rule just for the sake of it. Life's too short to not have a little fun.

My collection eventually grew to 9 and now I have my fill. There's not much I want to add and I'm content with the variety and specific watches I have. And because of that, I think very carefully if I want to buy another watch (if I buy x watch, it means I might wear y watch less). I'm now on two years without a new watch (a lifetime for us watch enthusiasts!)

A rule is a good starting point to keep ourselves in check to see if we really NEED that watch we're lusting for. Perhaps 6 just isn't enough for you as it wasn't for me.

I got to add three more quickly so that I get to the “Zen” state of mind you are in😁 I didn’t buy any watch for one year til this March but bought two since😅

Don’t overthink it. Buy what you love if you can. We only live once. Get the pink gold dress watch

·

I love you no matter what you do.

But,

... never, NEVER sell the JLC Master Geographic. (I have never owned one, but somehow i've been lusting over one since the 90's.)

·

Buy till the watch box and watch winder are full and you have a watch on your wrist, that's your new allotment 😁👍

That’s the last one I would ever sell. It’s the first mechanical watch I bought myself. It’s been with me for 24 years through good and bad. I ditched the concept of a keeper but this one is the exception 😉

·

Let me know if you decide you want to part with that Reverso 😎

So is that the 39 or 38mm version?

·

Just keep buying til the money runs out.

I will😂

Cherry on top - it’s a Duoface😉

·

Pssst… my friend there are no rules… it’s all in our head… 😁😉

Enjoy… your Welcome…

😘

·

Rules require occasional review and revision. Thus analysis is a good thing and it sounds like you found a weakness in the rules that needed corrected.

·

Nice issues to have. 😅

·

I’d move the Sinn, I seasonally it’s not for me. Out of the black dials you have I find it the most difficult to tell time.

·

Break the rule if it’s what you’re looking for… we only live once 🤣

In metal, it’s actually the easiest to read🤓

The date is impossible to see with my aging eyes, though🤣

·

Out of curiosity what's the brand of that brown felt watch box?

Break the rule. I told myself no more than six. I was a different man back then and own about fifteen now.

·

Thanks for that! That's such a classy case!

Well then!

If theres room in the heart theres room in the box 😂

Great collection.

I absolutely understand the self imposed restrictions/ rules. I think I appreciate my watches more now that I have cut them down to fit a core collection.

Back to your question, I would sell the Polaris as the Santos can definitely fulfill that criteria.

I wore mine to a conference at a beach resort. Bracelet in the pool and beach, leather for formal dinner (but bracelet would have been fine). Also worked just as great out casually or at the workplace.

Cheers 👍

Beautiful Santos! I was torn between silver and brown dials. I chose brown because I wanted to add colour to the collection.

My “captain boring” - Polaris, so understated and missing a distinct character, is the one I grab when I can’t decide which one to wear.

Santos is too beautiful and too distinct to replace the captain boring. It would take an Explorer 36 or OP 36 to replace it😁

Ah, I get you. Fair enough

Tough spot.

Maybe hang on to all of them and track your wrist time for each watch over a set period then drop the one least worn. If it all comes out relatively even, add an extra watch spot to the rules 😉

Enjoy working out what works with this sensational collection!
