An Unexpected Journey (Alt: SNXS79 and Amazon's Try Before You Buy)

About a year ago I vowed that my next watch purchase will be a big one, will be one to celebrate a significant event in life. But here we are, another entry level watch bought on a non-eventful day.

To be honest I wasn't even looking to add this particular watch. If you're familiar with Amazon, you will probably know that they have a Try Before You Buy program that allows you to try clothes/accessories for 7 days before you commit to the purchase. Their selection of watches aren't the most prestigious, but they do have an extensive selection.

I decided to try 3 watches because, why not? I had been itching for a new watch for a while, and my initial thought was to try them on for a week and send it back. I was interested in getting a watch made of aluminium for a while, and I was left with the two choices as pictured below.

Honestly I like the aluminium. Aluminium is lighter than even titanium, both watches were feather light. The sheen of the Bertucci was interesting, very different from stainless steel or titanium. Even though it had almost like a bead blasted finish, it was so bright in colour. Perhaps too much so, my wife asked why the watch looked so cheap. Ultimately the two watches did not make the cut and was thus repackaged and sent back home, or wherever they were before being sent to me.

Enter the SNXS79.

I honestly had no intention of keeping this one. I had enough experience with low-end automatic movements, and Hardlex or not, I did not want to deal with mineral crystals. I mostly wanted to try this one because it looks like a Rolex DJ. And as soon as I opened the box, I knew I was in trouble.

I haven't seen my brother's slate dial DJ in person before. But as soon as I opened that Seiko box, I imagined this what the dial must look like in person. Not only that, but the case was quite exquisitely polished, something I did not expect. The watch was quite a looker.

And so here I am, about $150 less rich, but oh so giddy about the new watch. It's far from perfect but I am enjoying the heck out of it so far. I'll be enjoying it a little longer before I write a more detailed review of my experience with the watch.

Funny, I just today placed an order for this watch! I kept reading about the 'Rolex alternative' Seiko. And wanted to compare it to my OP and Explorer. Fun times are ahead for us, mon ami!

Like the DJ, It’s got virtually perfect shape and dimensions. And it’s WAY better than a DJ - it doesn’t have that absurd and ugly cyclops!

A good watch is a good watch, price is sometimes irrelevant

@ckim4watches @nytime Welcome to the SNXS7x Club, mates! #snxs7x You definitely won't regret getting it.

@nytime I'm not surprised about your first reaction and excitement. Those of us who still keep our SNXS7x watch, continue to be giddy about it.

During the #snxs7xweek last Sept 4-10, I wrote 7 articles why this watch and line, are legendary. Here's the 1st one...

You can read the next 6 ones after that. ;)

Congrats and enjoy again, my fellow SNXS79-ers

Definitely there are many watches that are significantly better (sometimes worse) than their sale price. The case, dial, and finishing definitely seem much better than the price - movement and bracelet seems to offset that though!

I'm planning to get an updated presidential through uncle straps for mine because of the hair pulling. But I love mine a lot

Thankfully I don't have too much arm hair, but I am definitely planning to upgrade the bracelet in the distant future. The question is presidential or jubilee I guess 🤔

I like the Seiko Arabic/English mix

It was a pleasant surprised, especially as this is the J model; I expected Kanji.

·

That's an awesome watch! Honestly I think the new Seiko 5s just make too much sense over the old ones, unless you want a specific look.

Funnily enough I was looking at the same Jazzmasters before I bought the Spirit of Liberty Chrono - I'm sure you won't be dissapointed.

That is indeed awesome! Hope you enjoy it!

Oh wow, yeah that's an extra surprise for sure. Enjoy!

Fun and low key is what a Seiko 5 is. Great and pleasing finishing for the price too

It's certainly a looker. About +20s a day looker 😂

Touché. Whoever said that Great watches must come with even Greater price tags?
