The Classic Seiko 6309-7049
Ubiquitous, utilitarian, and built to withstand anything. This watch was gifted to me by my Father. It was issued to him in 1982 while he was working in the Diving & Rigging Locker at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard in Portsmouth, VA. My Father was a USN Diver and after leaving the Navy he got hired on as a diver at NNSY and spent the next 26 years diving and rigging. This particular 6309 was his everyday work and rec watch for 10 years. The amount of bottom time this watch has seen is legendary. This was not a desk diver, it got wet every single day, and the scrapes, scuffs, and scratches add to his many stories of underwater welding, ship repairs, screw changes, and salvage jobs. He wore it until 1992, and then he switched to a digital Timex Ironman. He gave it to me in 2005. I sent it to Motor City Watches for a service and cleaning. It’s 42 years old, keeps fantastic time, rarely loses any seconds, and just looks friggin’ cool on the new OEM rubber strap. Yeah, this one's a keeper, and it basically started my love affair with Seiko turtle style divers.
