Tiers of watches

What’s everyone’s thoughts on this?

This is a chart I found, I didn’t make it.

I’ve seen a lot of these and no two are the same. Don’t put too much thought into this.

·

WTF is a 'tier'?

I don't even understand what the thought process is of whomever made this. Like... 'Which is the fanciest? Which is the really really really fanciest?"

I don't think this is a thing for people who actually know about watches, not to gatekeep.

These are my thoughts! 🙂

Wait a minute ... I don't see Pagani Design 😂

Is there another tier I'm missing?

·

That'll work.

I’ve seen a few renditions of this tiered system as well. I will say this looks to be the “most accurate” version I have seen. I’d maybe switch a couple around but that’s about it. Definitely would move Rolex up a level but that’s probably my personal bias.

You don’t know what a tier system is? As in different levels. I think this one comes down to price, and horology but price is probably the main reason for the brands in their particular placement.

I do know what a tier system is, yes. I was being a little salty to indicate that I disagreed with the core idea of it in this context.

But if you want to rank companies for fun, go for it. I just think... that's not how I look at watches. It's not sports to me.

Ah okay you had me confused. I found this ranking so I brought it to the community for fun.

Lather rinse & repeat.

Yeah I get it! No shade on you, I'm just being sassy about the idea of it because you asked for thoughts.

I just wanna enjoy watches I enjoy and not worry about where they "rank"

I’m in agreement with “enjoying watches and not where they rank.” But these are always kind of fun. Like I said this is the better one from others I’ve seen. 1 had tag in the entry level watches and that was just low tier trolling haha. I didn’t think you were throwing shade at me. That’s what these posts are all for, having a discussion; when it comes to watches I’m all for a good discussion.

"Tier" is German for "animal". So, when you say an Omega is a different tier than an Orient, you're saying that the Omega is a different animal...

That was in the highest tier, but it had to be cut out for this meme.

·

Brand perception is subjective. Market position is objective, and there are lists for that.

Watch quality is largely objective, but that's not applicable for the brands as a whole. Rolex make everything the same quality, while TAG Heuer and Seiko definitely do not. Lorus/Seiko/Grand Seiko/Credor is intentionally vertically stacked, but they still overlap.

Summary: This table has no chance of being objectively correct.

High End Ultra Luxury LOL 😂

·

Load of b*llocks.

I’m gonna be honest, I have not heard of a single one of those brands you mentioned. Are those Swiss brands? Are they still in business?

They are all still in business and all doing really well, independent watchmakers. Guess the term “ultra luxury” can be viewed from different perspectives. I’m viewing it in a way these brands are very exclusive because production numbers are low. Prices are unimaginable. even if you had the money to buy, you need to wait for an opportunity to buy or bid at auctions.

Ah okay, I haven’t hit that level of horology to learn about those brands but I’ll check them out now. There’s another brand a Frenchman makes that falls into this level, he makes about 10-20 pieces a year and they sell upwards of a million per piece. I liked them, they weren’t gaudy they had class along with simplicity. I can’t remember his name though.

I was gonna get a Laurent Ferrier but they aren't even on the list. Maybe I'll look at SKMEI, are they on there somewhere?

That’s the dude I saw a video on. He makes gorgeous watches. He’s at the highest level of class, and horology art. Seriously gorgeous timepieces.

SKMEI is a person???😜

I really had no idea that Laurent Ferrier was a single person. I guess that might be why he is not on here, like Rexhep, as deemed too small or something.

Yeah he’s a Swiss dude the name was familiar and I saw a video of his watches and they gave a short story on his background. It’s really interesting, wish I had saved it so I could share it. Dude goes into the forest to source wood for polishing his watches 🤣

Take this kinda like the BMI scale, it's a clear, visual, and sometimes useful point of reference but not so much the rule as many will tell you it is.

That’s a spot on analogy! Like I said though bro, this is definitely one of the better ones I’ve seen. A few need switched around other than that it’s fairly spot on.

I'll be honest I stopped looking at these tiers from how many times I've seen them on tiktok lol. The debates in the comments are absolute brain rot, someone once said Swatch is a better brand than Bulova because they believed Bulova is a fashion brand 🤦🏻

That’s a hot take, it’s very wrong but it is a hot take. I’ve only seen these on Facebook or instagram, the DA ones are on Instagram. Honestly not surprising at all that these originated on tik tak since that whole platform is pretty dumb (hence 1 reason I don’t have it) haha.

I’m so used to not having a lot of money for toys, I’m surprised that two of my watches are in the “basic luxury” tier. Of course, one was a gift (my late grandfather’s ’55 Longines) and the other cost around $500 used (Junghans).

Yeah this ranking is something someone threw together. But it’s a fairly accurate list. Longines is a great brand. Wish I still had my grandfather’s watches. Make sure to cherish yours!
