The Apple Watch ๐Ÿ

Calendar day 9 of 24 ๐ŸŽ… Merely 7years ago the first model dropped, setting off the smartwatch revolution. One could think it would be a competitor to the traditional watch industry, but the interest for classic timepieces has exploded in this same 7 year period. Is this selfproclaimed watch even a watch? Does it get cred for those people it brought back to wearing regular watches?

And I thought yesterday was controversial day ๐Ÿ˜ฎ

For me this one is an easy one

I have to grudgingly rate this as a classic. Grumble grumble.

Sometimes the hard decision is the right decision ๐Ÿคฃ I went overrated this time, for the first time this calendar.

Total gamechanger. The sales volume alone is legendary, the ubiquity unparalleled.ย

I know the buggy whip buyers have their undies in a bunch over the devastating fact that even the newfangled quartz revolution has been surpassed, making mechanical watches even more passe and obsolete, but it is so.ย

It's a classic, begrudgingly. Weirdly enough a ton of people wearing the apple watch have a analog hand display, or maybe it's the one I notice the most. Whatever! But I see so many posts all over the internet saying something like, "I got sick of wearing all this stuff on my wrist, so I got/went back to this (more traditional style watch) and its better!"

The irony is that the interest for old school watches has increased alongside this evolution (or revolution?).

I think there is a whole generation that grew up not needing a watch. But the smartwatch showed some of them that they enjoy it and some don't want the all encompassing experience, but a simple timepiece. For many the way was through the smartwatchย

When I see some classy guy wearing a "mini phone" on his wrist I want to vomit.

ยท

I wear my Apple Watch under my right cuff and my mechanical exposed on my left cuff. That works well for me. They serve different functions. I find it helpful to just look down at the time on a traditional watch face. I don't need the extra information from the Apple Watch on a regular basis. I've set it so it notifies me for the things I need to be notified about and can therefore ignore my iPhone.

ยท

Iโ€™ve owned one for years, but I almost never wear it anymore unless Iโ€™m hiking/biking/canoeing and want to track what Iโ€™m doing. I will say that owning an Apple Watch did have a significant role in my getting into the hobby, though. I still remember looking down at my wrist one day and thinking I hate this thing and I want a real watch with actual moving parts. Bought my first automatic* shortly thereafter.ย

*a Seiko 5 that I still have but couldnโ€™t tell you the model for all the spaghetti at Olive Garden.

Sounds like a good solution ๐Ÿ˜Š

Lots of votes for "irrelevant". ย I doubt the watch industry would agree.

36 hours easy on the new "Ultra" model...of course Garmins get a week or more

ยท

I have the Ultra. Definitely 36 hours+ for my use (little use of cellular)

Iโ€™m not sure that I classify the Apple Watch as an actual โ€˜Watchโ€™. ย

Yes, it does display the time. So does my phone. ย So does my stove. So does my coffee machine.

It seems to me that the Apple Watch is more of a โ€˜wrist computerโ€™ than a watch. ย Iโ€™m not interested in it because I think thereโ€™s fair reason to worry about privacy intrusions like weโ€™ve seen tech companies do many, many times - caught after they institute habitual obnoxious offenses. ย Wear one if you like. ย But, donโ€™t think for one minute that it isnโ€™t being used to mine data on you without your knowledge.

Just my opinion.

ยท

I voted overrated, as a smart watch I have a Garmin instinct for work essentially and love it. I personally think the Garmin does everything a smart watch needs to do and it's solid!ย

I have guys I work alongside however that would die by them. Each to their own!

ยท

It's a piece of technology with built in obsolescence. Watches aren't designed with that caveat.

Therefore it's irrelevant surely?

ยท

It's a watch @TheMightyOz in the sense that it displaces the possibility of other more traditional devices from that position on the body (few double wrist, I think). But yeah, it's a wrist computer.

@Guvnor64 many watches are certainly disposable--think of many a watch bought at a store like WalMart. An Apple Watch may not be disposable like those but an old Apple Watch isn't going to be any more obsolete than those devices in a decade or so, in that it will continue to tell the time.

Watch, or information mining device? ย I simply feel like it is no more a watch than a phone, etc. ย Yes it displays time. ย Its larger purpose has nothing to do with it being a โ€˜watchโ€™ and everything to do with data mining and trying you into an โ€˜ecosystemโ€™ - in this case Apple.

ยท

This is the most difficult one yet.ย

Is it a legend? Sales wise maybe, but nobody will want to buy the Apple Watch 2 sitting unloved in your drawer now or the latest model 5 years down the line.

Is it a classic? The design is definitely recognisable, so maybe. Will it look good in a decade or look dated - maybe.

Overrated? To me maybe, but many many others love them. Ubiquitous certainly.

Irrelevant? Not sales wise

I had a Fitbit once, but would never consider it one of my watches. Weird because I wore it on my wrist and used it to tell the time. Same with the Apple Watch.

Yep that's true many cheap watches are arguably disposable as they are easy to replace. But I would argue smart devices like the apple watch and Samsung watches which I own, have built in obsolescence. Watches, by which I mean everything that is not a smart device are not designed that way.

ยท

I voted overrated, simply because I feel that the smart watch and traditional watch aren't really competing apart from the fact they are both worn on the wrist. I suspect most people who switched to the Apple Watch wore cheap quartz digitals and analog watches before the switch, if they wore a watch at all.ย

I've taken to wearing a fitness tracker on my right wrist when at home, or out and about with long sleeves(so it's hidden). I like the heartrate, and sleep monitoring, but have shut-off 90% of the other notifications.ย

Fair enough.

If apple watch is categorized as a wristwatch and can compete with mechanical and quartz pieces, does it mean that my phone can be categorized as a pocket watch?ย
