Tissot PRX - Quartz or Automatic

I would be curious to know what you guys think when it comes to this one. On one hand you've got the waffle dial and ETA movement. On the other you've got equal build quality, 8 year battery life and a lower price tag. I have been back and forth in my head thinking which is the more worth while purchase but would be curious to see what your guys take on it is

I love the waffle dial and the ETA movement is tried and true - to me it is well worth the price difference.  The dial is amazing!

·

From my perspective, and I am biased, I would get the quartz version. The design is to a large degree a homage to the 80s, which was dominated by quartz watches. I have a quartz watch with a similar design that is still working today. The mechanical version of the PRX seems somewhat beside the point to me. Plus, I'm also really not that found of waffle dials.

Don't get me wrong, Tissot makes mechanical watches that are great values, but I would personally get one where the interior matches the exterior.

I would get neithet,i dont really like it and i think its pretty overrated.

The waffle dial really does set it apart from the quartz version, although there's nothing wrong with a plain sunburst blue

Very well said, you can't beat quartz reliability

The waffle dial seals it for me. It’s a winner in any category, especially < $1,000

Thats fair enough, I can see why it wouldn't be for everyone

I agree, Tissot's value for money is really up there with the likes of Seiko and Orient

I'm quite taken with the leaked 35mm gold quartz one featured in today's Caseback Watch of the Week vid. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E6rb2FnUcu0

I was ready to buy the quartz when I got a deal on the black auto from an AD. I am not a quartz snob and I actually prefer the sunburst. I am also tired of setting dead autos so they end up just collecting dust. Feel like the auto waffle dial is just too homage-y to the APRO. But it is stunning on the wrist. Glad I got the auto in the end. I would personally like a two hand version of the PRX in quartz.

Now they are incredibly intriguing. The 40mm of the PRX from last year seemed Ok but with such a large lug to lug size it just didn't work for me. Definitely looking forward to these releasing properly

I see what you mean about the Royal Oak but I think that's probably contributed to a large amount of the PRX's sales. Definitely like your choice going for the black dial version

Powermatic for me. Love the long power reserve and the waffle dial just cinches it for me. Definitely a top contender for value in 2021.

I must say the power reserve is one of my main reasons for considering it. Watches like my Seiko SRPE53 go dead far too often

·

If it didn’t have alignment issue with quartz, that would be great.. anyway automatic has also some unliked specs, like case size or waffle dial. Difficul to choose🤷🏻‍♂️

·

I'd personally go for the auto because I feel like if I got the quartz I would always be longing for the Powermatic. Yet again the quartz is technically the more period correct version and I have a PR100 Powermatic 80, which is basically the PRX's modern counterpart

·

I agree!!

·

Auto for me but today they accidentally leaked the new 35mm quartz version that will be available in April and I'm really looking forward to trying it out since the protruding bracelet was not very comfy in my kid wrist. 😂

·

Quartz watch movements?

What's next, electric cars?

I'm not saying I'd never own a "soulless electric watch" (as I'm fond of calling them), and I'm no Luddite, but as I sit here I can't imagine it happening. They really don't appeal to me.

For that matter, I'm not sure I buy trading beat rate for power reserve. That doesn't appeal to me either.

·

i would (and will) go for the quartz for two reasons:

1- the diseign transpire quartz. It's a really really post quartz-crisis design

2- I feel like i could not afford the service if something goes wrong with the automatic PRX80 movement.

·

I personally prefer the sunburst dial over the waffle just like others say the waffle is too homage-y to me. I like automatic movements tho. A solution if you dislike the ticking hand is to remove it altogether lol

·

This is a question I've pondered for a while now myself. I use to have lots of quartz watches but way to often I'd reach for one to find a dead battery. This was my biggest issues with a Tissot Chrono Quartz I use to own. Left a sour taste with Tissot and Quartz movements. Having said that I have G-Shock that's been running on the original battery for over 8 years so maybe my Tissot was a dud. Anyway I'm rambling I'd likely go with the auto even though I'm not a big fan of waffle dials. The real question for me is Tissot PRX or Tissot Gentleman?

·

I was in the same dilemma I decided against both. I’m waiting for a mechanical version that’s sub 40mm without waffle dial.

I would personally say the PRX. I dont think the Gentleman has enough going for it. In a way I feel like it almost looks too simple and generic to justify the price tag. Just my thoughts though

the same for me. Tissot heard the consumer's wish.

  1. May I check what your experience is with battery life? My admittedly cheap Casio quartz runs around 3 to 4 months on a new battery which is disappointing. Is this the norm or is something wrong with my watch?

My experience with quartz batteries is about 3+ years on average. and I'm referring to simple 3-hand watches, or chronos that don't see the chronograph option used much. (My kinetic lasted 16 years.) My watches largely used Seiko and Ronda movements.

Thanks. That is way better than what I have experienced.

Yes, it could be the watch, but more than likely the batteries may be the problem.

Yesterday I booked my quartz varient and I liked it very much mechanical one is double the price so i didn't go with it plus AD gave me offer.
