Thoughts on the new 38mm Seiko 5?

Hey everyone! Recently I’ve had the chance to check out some awesome new Seiko models and take photos of them.

One watch that stands out is the the mint green 38mm Seiko 5. It definitely wears smaller than my SKX007 and SKX009 that I’ve become so used to, but I think it’s nice to have a smaller option with fun dial colors. I plan on adding this one to my collection, plus it’s so fun to take pics of!

Curious to know your guys’ thoughts on this watch!

Not a fan of the color but I love the size, the case and the style of the face. Yessireee!

I saw it on vacation when I went to CA. I had been enamored with the color when I saw it online but handling it in person was a little bit of a letdown. Felt like the price point matched the quality.

I have the standard size and I have a small wrist but I don't think it wears particularly big. 🤔 I would like to try on a 38mm but really, this entire line makes me want to find a good quality SKX.

Don't get me wrong, I love the SKX013 size. But I find it hard to get on board with this new Seiko. The SKX was available for <200€ before it was discontinued. The SRPD released at 295€ MSRP. Now they are asking 350€ MSRP for this new SRPK. The prices keep going up and up, for less watch each time. What happened to Seiko?

Got the teal variant for my girlfriend, and she is thoroughly enjoying it on a mesh bracelet which surprisingly is a very good combination with the teal dial.

For me personally, it wore too small for a dive watch cause I'm used to my SKX007 and other 40+mmSeiko divers. Also for some reason, the 38mm case felt smaller than my 37mm SNXS75 on the wrist. Nonetheless, it's a fun colour and the gold hands work really nicely in person.

Seiko5 good…just get it

·

They look cool in person, but man, I would gladly pay a few more if they were sapphire

Damn you Seiko and your obsession with hardlex!

·

I'm getting one then modding it with a bezel that has a red dot, swapping the hands for stainless and a red second hand. (Skx013 bezels fit... I think)

Wait until the new Orient divers start coming in at a smaller case size.

Although I will say, MSRP for Seiko's has always been ridiculous, IMO. Which is why I'll usually go the Amazon/ebay/creation/Joma route for them.

Should be the perfect size for me. Just waiting for more colours to be announced. A nice navy blue and I'm sold.

Previously had the bigger SRPD but had to sell it as it was too big for me, despite the short 46mm lug to lug.

·

I had the same response at first and the watch felt too small. I spent some more time wearing it, and my eyes were able to adjust. Can’t go wrong with that classic sizing of the SKX though!

I don’t think the SKX wears too big at all! This 38mm is just a fun addition to the collection—something different from the other watches I have! :)

A nize one. But to be honest i don t like the golden lining on the hands while the indices are silver lined. Still weird

In my opinion, without considering the price. It is a solid watch, especially for someone (like me) who has a small wrist (5.5"). The bezel action is surprisingly better than other Seiko 5 or even higher-end 4R movement Seiko divers.

But there are interesting design choices or cut corners:

  1. Look closely and you can see the color of the hands and the indices are different. The hands are more yellow-ish, while the indices are white.

  2. The bracelet...... is hollow, it rattles and squeaks (but tbh its almost the same quality of 20 years old 5 digit Rolexes)

  3. The dial is actually sunburst, but you really won't notice it unless in harsh sunlight.

  4. The clasp is longer than what I like. Meant that it doesn't fit as well as an Alpinist clasp does on my wrist.

I notice all that stuff too. But I love the color of the dial so much that I really don't care.

You're right Samdeatton! These negatives aren't that noticeable once you got it on the wrist.
