What are your watch icks?

In other words what are you absolute, no will not buy, features on a watch?

Here are some of mine.

  • Odd lug widths

  • Anything that is a direct copy (looking at you Pagani Designs)

  • Non-clicking rotating bezel (what’s the point)

  • Vegan leather strap (I suppose if I like the watch enough I may, but the strap will never touch my wrist)

  • Anything Richard Mille-ish, to be clear I will never have the money to spend on it but I just can’t get behind the design.

Let’s start a conversation!

To each their own but mainly Ugly logos for me.

Cyclops.

Even on a Rolex?

Who do you define as ugly?

·

Integrated straps/bracelets

Overlapping scales or subdials

Diamonds

Branded Fakes

Snowflake hour hands

MB&F

·

Watches that require software.

Watches with precious stones. (Just not for me.)

Hublot… I’ve just never liked them. My dislike for them predates Nico’s for whatever that’s worth.

·

Richard Mille, Hublot, Romain Jerome, Jacob & Co

·

Jewels and precious gems of any kind on a watch. Cyclopses. Not sure if I’d call it a complete turn off, but I really don’t like Bauhaus minimalist dials.

·

Certain brand names.. (Erebus looking at you* 😂 👀🤏🏻 all in good nature btws)

Non drilled lugs

No lume

*IFYKYK 😂

Apple Watch🤮

Yeah watches that keep perfect time just suck!

·

With rare exception, (Accutron for example) quartz movements. If I want an electric watch I have my Apple Watch.

·

Black or gold pvd watches

·

"Bio-Ceramic"...

Sometimes some things you say no! no! no! to, you might change your mind the future.

I think as we mature as humans we have different wants and our view of the world changes.

In the past I had said no to:

  • Non-3 handed watches

  • Gmts

  • Chronographs

  • High polish cases

  • Watches that didn’t come with a scratch resistant coating or bezel

  • Acrylic crystal

  • Watches that didn’t come with OEM bracelet

  • Leather straps

  • Quartz watches

  • Solar powered watches

  • Colorful dials

  • Non on-the-fly adjustable claps

  • Lesser known brands (like a microbrand)

  • Rolex

  • Larger watch cases

  • Smaller watch cases

  • Watches that don’t come with lume

  • Watches that don’t have applied indicies

  • Etc

Your watch collection is a collection your ideals and personality. I used to want a huge watch collection but as I’ve only one wrist (I’ve tried double wristing but it’s not for me) I’ve downsized my collection and really thinking with my head instead of all heart.

You’ll make a lot of mistakes in watch collecting but you’ll hopefully learn from it.

Happy collecting!

  • super retro lugs that look like they were soldered to a pocket watch case

  • rectangular, square and tonneau dials

  • no hour markers

  • no running second

  • gemstones anywhere

  • golden cases or bracelets

  • vintage watches

  • mechanical movement without handwinding

  • plastic lookalikes of famous designs

·
Beanna

Cyclops.

That might change with age.

The usual culprits for me are:

  1. 24Hr indicators on chronographs. They are as useless as tits on a bull or a conscience for a politician.

  2. NATO straps. It's the fastest and surer way to insta-cheap the look of any watch and to make you look like a gypsy fortune teller shaking her bangles.

  3. "Snowflake" hands. This isn't even the official name but nobody wants to take the responsibility to grant a name to a road hazard post masquerading as a watch's hand.

  4. Cyclops/magnifiers: The crystal pimple is as welcome as a wart on my butt.

  5. Two tone gold watches. I'm simply not close enough to retirement to consider an "old man special" wrist accessory.

  6. Roman numerals, because not everyone can be like Cartier

  7. California dials because they just look like they are trying a bit too hard to look interesting and unusual.

  8. Integrated bracelets. It's just not my style.

  9. Negative displays on digital watches. Also see "tacticool". Idiocy that pretends to be useful in unlikely scenarios but just makes the watch close to unusable most of the time.

  10. Misaligned bezels. There should be no excuse for this If any no name AliExpress brand can sell watches with a perfectly aligned bezel for the price of a modest sandwich.

Gotta admit I had a good laugh…not with your list but rather your annotations. As an old man who IS retired, I especially liked #5. I have TWO such watches! Keep skinning those cats!!!

How do you feel about every watch just being a sellita SW200 movement? I'm personally kind of over it. It just feels over played so I'm steering clear. I respect it for what it is but it feels like watch companies are defaulting to it and mehhh.

For me, Sellita SW200 is in the same category as ETA 2824-2 and PT5000. ETA being the original, Sellita being the second best and PT5000 third.

I value those 3 movements more than Powermatic 80,the robot-assembled, hard-to-service, 3Hz, sometimes plastic parts movement.

Just my subjective opinion.

I don't like the secretomany about movement characteristics. Even if is dressed in a marketing poem.

·

Anything gold, it gives off old man, cheesy mafia gangster vibes. To each their own but it isn’t for me.

Agreed! I don’t have a Powermatic 80 and I don’t want one.

Ufffff. As a New Jersian, I’d be lying if I said I didn’t want one watch to make me look like Tony Soprano. lol. But no hate, gold’s not for you. My husband feels the same way.

Totally agree. I think my “no’s” have become more lax, and I’ve come to appreciate most watches for what they are.

Make sure you pair it with gold rings and a gold necklace outside your shirt haha

Have to commit to the bit!

Referring mainly to this one. Ruined a great watch imo.

Bring it

I can live with the hands but the steam whistle glued on the left is a deal breaker for me.

San Martin, Phoibos, Orient's cigarette carton logo to name a few.

I have to admit that the pseudo heraldic logo of Orient looks exactly like something I would expect to see on a cigarette carton.

  • "Iced out" or "bling watches"

  • Mercedes, snowflake, broad arrow hands

  • Fluted bezels

  • Chronograph dials that are "too busy"

  • California dials

  • Rose gold, bronze & two-tone

  • Integrated bracelets

  • Anything that requires a battery

  • Vintage watches that have been redialed, reprinted, refurbished, over polished

  • Vintage styled watches with fake patina

  • Designer/fashion watches

  • 4:30 date windows

  • Power reserve indicators on the dial

I forgot about the fluted bezel. Absolutely a hard pass for me.

·

Odd date window placement. I like the practicality of a date window, but I don’t like when it’s the first thing your eye is drawn to! 👀

Absolutely.
