Pulsar watches are dead!

Obviously, Pulsar is no more 😢 So much history is gone...

I am so happy that bought the new civil version of gen1 last year ❤

They just changed the name to ALBA and that is anyhow a clearly better name, in my humble opinion... And Seiko still make Lorus, too... And they also own Orient!

I'm actually surprised over the many horrible brand names, as Citizen who should have the companys real name - Miyota! (** I just learned that Miyota only make Citizens movements)

·

I love Pulsar watches. Especially vintage early Pulsar. The name Pulsar is objectively superior to "Alba". Moreover the brand's history and accomplishments aren't to be understated.

·

I feel safe in saying that, at some point, somebody will revive the Pulsar name. If there’s one thing you can be sure of, it’s that folks lack imagination and will grab onto any bit of “history” rather than make something new.

·

Seiko paid money for that name, as much to quiet and control it as to promote it. Pulsar was originally Hamilton's electric watch of the future. The first ones were made in Lancaster, PA.

This actually saddens me a bit. I have owned a few.

I’m not sure I understand your post… Alba is a better name than Pulsar, why is that? Pulsar, Alba, Lorus… it’s all Seiko, how are you ranking these?

Why should Citizen change their name?

·

I have a pretty cool analog/digital Pulsar in my “to be repaired” box. The analog portion is good, but the pushers for the digital are damaged. Haven’t found a solution yet.

I didn't say ALBA is a better brand, because I guess it simply is the same brand with a new name... So ALBA should be just as good as Pulsar, but the name sound better...

Just as LG did change to LG when the company "Lucky" bough "Goldstar" and realized that "Lucky Goldstar" won't be the best name... But LG is naturally the same brand as Lucky Goldstar, even if they changed the name...

So I naturally rank the brand ALBA exactly the same as Pulsar, which did offer extra value... And I think they are on the same level as Lorus, just under Orient (who Seiko just bought) and on top we find Seiko.

And Citizen is just the main brand name, for the real company Miota and they have also the budget brand Q&Q (** I just learned that Miyota only make Citizens movements)

But I personally think Miyota is a clearly finer name and it is also a real name, as Sony or Seiko...

But it is possible to late to change Citizen's name now, even if it is a bit silly...

Like "Panasonic" that first was "National" then "National Panasonic" and finally "Panasonic" which also it a bit silly!

Not like names as Yamaha, Nakamichi, Sansui, Sony, Denon, Seiko, Casio, Toshiba...

·

Most likely they’d do it themselves. 10 years from now when profits are down in the 3rd quarter, some bright-eyed executive will get the idea to re-release some old Pulsar watches.

Not what I asked. Thanks for explaining branding to me though, I’m happy for you to treat me like an idiot.

Again, why is Alba a better name than Pulsar?

I’ll keep asking till I get something that isn’t “because I said so”

Several watch shops told me at different times, that Miyota is the real company behind Citizen, maybe because they saw that the movements inside was branded Miyota...

But I did finally find in Wikipedia, that Miyota only make the movements for most Citizen watches and that Citizen first was partly Swiss!

And that Bulova is own by Citizen...

You did ask me how I rank them, so I thought you was thinking that I meant that ALBA was a better brand and not a better name...

And I wrote that ALBA is a finer name in my opinion, partly because it is a very childish fantasy / space name just like Panasonic or Goldstar... And partly because my Mom got very angry on me, when I bought a very fine Pulsar to my Dad - saying that you should never ever buy a budget brand as a present... And ALBA can now be known as "high value" watches instead...

·

That's sad to hear. My Pulsar Titanium has done me well for 17 years and I associated the brand with affordable quality.

Not sure what rebranding will achieve unless over the years Pulsar has picked up a negative reputation that I'm unaware of. Looking at the range of Alba watches was underwhelming, seen better looking watches on AliExpress!

So you feel Citizen, who is over a hundred years old, and developed the first waterproof watch in Japan in the 50’s and the Eco-Drive should change their name?

Why again?

As I wrote just above... "Several watch shops told me at different times, that Miyota is the real company behind Citizen, maybe because they saw that the movements inside was branded Miyota... And I did simply trust these shops / experts, who honestly thought Miyota was the real company behind the name Citizen... And the last time I got that info was over 20 years ago, so the only easy way I could check if it was wrong (then) was to visit Japan and I have not been there, sorry!!

I’ve got half a dozen old Pulsars. Now maybe they will increase in value. Maybe go up to $50/each.

Alba reminds me of a movie actress. Not sure it’s a better name than Pulsar. Sounds kind of generic. Unless it’s owned by a former movie actress.

·

RIP Pulsar, all opinions aside

·

Prefer the name Pulsar I think.

·

Shame. They're nice designs but I just can't get over the name. Alba reminds me of DVD players

Interesting point.

Question for all: Which models would most likely be re-released?

Just found some a few in an old jewelry box
