There's something odd about being afraid of or angry at technology that does what we want it to better than some other technology. I imagine that some people took umbrage when the verge-and-foliot escapement fitted to a weight driven mechanism displaced sundials and the water clock.

I've had the same feeling visiting a high end bordello in Amsterdam. The solution to that dilemna was to pick two -- or three.

I'm a nut for vintage -- but I know I need to add $250 to service any vintage watch I buy; even if the seller says they just got it serviced. (They all lie.)

My Junghans is one of my birth year watches (1950). Runs great and looks great, IMHO. I think you can expect to get 73 years out of your new Junghans as well; I certainly hope so.

Is that Mondaine the stop2go type? I love those!

Go with one of the Cartier's. You or your wife will always be able to impress people when you show them the little "cartier" as part of the numeral VII. Between the quartz and the automatic, I'd go with the quartz -- more accurate, less maintenance, and the date window does not add, it detracts.

You are right on target. Irony -- that's the keyword of the day. “Haute hologerie” was a phrase once used as part of a campaign for the Swiss mechanical community to survive. Now, as you rightly say, it's jargon used to aggrandize the holy trinity and the big boys.

I wish I had more confidence in the microbrands, much as I love many of them. The problem is that the movements all come from the big boys, so there's not going to be any "haute horologie" coming from them, only inventive design and striking aesthetics (not that there's anything wrong with that.)

On the horns of a dilemna. What watch to buy next? Anordain Fabrik Blue Dial OR Hamilton Jazzmaster Open Heart Price is same ballpark.
