And also why we should research comments from actual owners here, on Reddit, and in comment-treads elsewhere to get truthful information about a watch’s quality and other issues that official reviews won’t mention because they’re literally forbidden to address substantial flaws.

It’s not a “do you think they are” it’s a known fact. Many high profile YouTubers in this space have said straight up that the major brands (Rolex/Tudor, Omega/Swatch, Richemont, etc) dictate what can and can’t say in their reviews, demand final editorial approval, and withhold product samples, access, and invitations to press events as leverage.

“I would never pay $$$$ for that brand” is the quickest way to spot ignorance and snobbery in the watch community. If you (or the people you think care how much you spent on your watch) can’t see past the logo on the dial in judge something’s value on its own terms, you’re not paying for a watch, you’re paying for a marketing campaign.

And, for what it’s worth, I really do like the watch and often get compliments on it. And the “street price” story is true: It was given to me many years ago from a friend returning from a year studying in Belarus who literally did get it in exchange for some condoms and batteries. She was amazed it still existed when I texted her a photo of the watch on my wrist. It’s also worth noting that it’s never been serviced and still runs flawlessly. I have more accurate watches, but this ain’t the least accurate watch I’ve owned, either…

Thank you. It’s about time St Petersburg was recognized as the horological epicenter it’s always been.
