I got into watches through my passion for industrial design, specifically the watches that Giorgetto Giugiaro designed for Seiko in the 80s.
Q: What was the first watch you ever owned?
I think I had a Charlie The Tuna watch as a kid…
Q: What is one piece of advice you have for someone just getting into watches?
Don’t buy into the hype, don’t listen to watch reviewers who are also watch dealers, and once you can tell real quality from marketing hype, wear what you love. Oh, and “Swiss Made” doesn’t mean what you think it does.
Q: What brands have been getting your attention lately?
I will always pay attention to what Seiko is up to, but generally I focus on the watch, not the logo on the dial. I have my biases for and against certain brands, but I really try to judge every watch on its own terms and bristle when anyone throws out blanket assumptions that any brand’s products are inherently good or bad. Not everyone can make a great watch, but a great watch can come from anywhere.
