Rolex's 2nd-string sponsors Red Bull's. #irony

Talk about a natural partnership: A watch brand used by its market-dominating parent as a test-bed for new ideas but firmly kept in check to never overtake its owners paying to be associated with an F1 team in exactly the same position: F1-dominating Red Bull Racing's "Visa Cash App RB" sub-team (catchy name, huh?). Per the press release: "Slapping the TUDOR name on a winning car is easy. But choosing the right team to support is another story." Amen to that...but I'm not sure they're getting the irony here.

Mega bonus points for Tudor NOT going with a chronograph in the pic, as a dive watch is no more useful to an F1 team. I find it refreshing that they're not pretending their watch is a tool used by anyone in the cockpit or paddock and owning this as a simple sponsorship deal with a team that shares their "don't forget who's the boss" positioning. Good on em for doing sponsorship with a lot less BS than we’re used to.

Lost me with "Rolex's 2nd-string".

While pic seems to be a low quality pic of the ceramic BB (a watch I quite like!) they don’t mention any watch by name or show a proper pic of a ‘F1 watch’ below.

In that way, it’s kind of like their sponsorship of Tudor Pro cycling and the massive race, the Giro D’Italia : huge undertaking but no direct link to any watch they make

If they made a ‘cycling watch’ it’d be carbon or ceramic and sweat and shock proof. Maybe black and pink a la Giro colors. Or black red like their pro team. I’d buy it quick. A chronograph IS NOT a cycling watch.

Weirdly - the only sport that gets a special Tudor made for it is sailing, with those 2 alighi models.

BUT - in a great irony, their sailing watch isn’t a sailing watch, which always uses a countdown timer, not a regular chronograph

Arg Tudor! I want to get one but you keep doing sport watches wrong. I’ll keep hoping tho.

FWIW, Tudor did do a “cycling” watch for their team but it wasn’t released commercially, only to team members. And, yes, it’s a big, heavy Black Bay chronograph that would be completely useless on a serious cyclist’s wrist, but at least it’s a cool colorway. And, of course, Hodinkee had to go full cosplay and dress up one of their editors to ride with Tudor’s team. It was super cute.

If you haven’t seen it, Bravur makes a series of cycling-inspired watches that are each designed (and updated each year) to evoke the major tours. As you’d suggested, the Giro is awesome—black and pink in a compact 38mm case. Each variant is fun and has little Easter eggs baked into the designs that would only make sense to cycling nerds and I love that approach so much more than the typical luxury-brand approach of releasing something highly technical and earnestly pretending it’s a purpose-built tool for an elite cyclist (or driver or whatever). The Tissot “cycling” watches are almost cool—and decently priced—but a bit too big for my tastes. That said, I’m of the mind that the Apple Watch Ultra is the best cycling watch there is—light, durable, massively functional and (by this hobby’s standards anyway) affordable. My bike is literally the only reason I have an Apple Watch but I consider it absolutely essential on rides.

It’s just me but Tudor should created a new race line set of watches minus the snowflake, either with a sword hour hand or it’s own design Mercedes type hour hand, they have the ability to do it

I’m sure they’ll do something—maybe a chrono in the team colors—but I hope they don’t print the team name on the dial. I can’t imagine anyone would wear “VISA CASH APP RB RACING”

Never thought of that lol
