Breitling SuperOcean 42 - Underhyped ? Overpriced ?

What do you all think of this Breitling. I have grown to love it. My first luxury watch purchase. But I am thinking of getting rid of it for a BB54.

Do you think it deserves some love ?

Yes why not? I think it is a very good looking watch. To me personally it is a little too big for my 17cm wrist even if technically it’s not. Very nice green color on yours👍

·

Why? That is inferior to a BB 54? I respect and own a bunch of Tudor watches but that Breitling is much more striking in my opinion. I own a pile of older Breitlings also. I hope that you are not preferring the smaller case size, that of course is preference.

·

I think the Tudor Black Bays are getting more and more common. To me the Super Ocean is more unique.

·

PLEASE, do not get rid of it for the bb54. This watch has so much character and has its own great history.

IMO, the bb54 wouldn't get nearly the love if people online didn't hype it up. Its boring, small and uninspiring.

But your Breitling... the hands, the date, the green, the bracelet... screams individuality and that YOU picked your watch... the bb54, again IMO, means you bought the latest hype piece.

The Breitling deserves SO much love... it looks great!

Keep the Breitling! It’s way more interesting and one of the best mesh bracelets around!

·

What an amazing watch!

·

It’s gorgeous. I’ve always assumed those itty bitty lume plots might not perform so well, but I’ve never tried it first-hand. Great looking watch though.

·

I would not give up that Breitling for a BB54.

Is it underhyped? Yes.

Is it overpriced? Yes

Still a cool watch.

·

Love the mesh bracelet. Breitling does the hidden link thing really well -- no one that I've seen does it better. The rest of the watch is just "meh" for me design-wise though.

·

Beautiful watch! That green...😍

·

I think it looks great! Why not get both! 😅

·

Why would you get rid of your Breitling superocean heritage for the over hyped BB?

Beautiful dive watch vs mundain oversubscribed diver no contest

·

That green is better then a freshly cut golf course! I like it!

·

IMO keep the Super Ocean and save up for the BB54. You will be happiest with both

They do it well! Thanks mate

Thats a better idea ahhaha. Ill get it one day

·

That’s a beautiful watch. Unique dial color in the Super Ocean, Breitlings best looking watch. The Black Bay is becoming so ubiquitous. If you want the BB 54, get it, but definitely don’t let that Super Ocean go.

I will start my answer by saying I like both Tudor and Breitling enough to own them both. I have a SOH2 in the collection, as well as a blackbay.

I find the finishing on the Breitling miles better. Inlays finishing? Hands finishing? Movement finishing? Case? Brand cache & history? let's be fair, it's all greater on the Breitling.

For some reason (maybe due to the in-your-face-designs before the Kern era?) the brand recognition is suffering, but recovering. A lot of collectors still refuse to collect breitling. I disagree, they're great pieces for the price in my opinion!

Let's take the movement finishing as an example. A few years ago, Breitling agreed to swap B01 movement with Tudor, in exchange for the MT5652. These are pictures of the same movements in the two watches.

Tudor MT5652:

Despite liking both, I think the Breitling is on another league altogether. I think the brand will regain momentum, but they do need to work on their sizing in most model lines. Some people may disagree with me, but that's my opinion.

EDIT to add: However! 🙂 if Tudor is really what you wish for, that's what you should have! This is not a highly logical hobby is it?

Amazing response. Much appreciated. You are right, the watch itself is incredibly finished.

Forget the Tudor.. your Superocean looks great.. and it's a Tudor movement inside.. so by keeping your Breitling, you can say you have a Tudor and a Breitling in one..
