Deep Black Watches: Boring or Traditionally Beautiful?

As I fall deeper into the abyss of watch collecting, I sometimes spend my free time watching (pun intended) at my collection and ponder. During one of my meditations I came into the realization that, damn, I love deep colored dials.

Unfortunately (or fortunately, as I have an excuse to buy some more watches) this is my one and only deep black watch. My Seiko 5 SNKP. Despite the low price point, the dial is very pretty to look at. This image doesn’t do any justice to how it looks in real life:

I also notice this refined taste of mine, due to the watches that attracted me lately:

Image

The first is Tag Heuer Carrera Twin Time automatic, a GMT watch which has a plethora of color variants. But this one, this one is just so pretty to look at.

Another one that took my heart, but unfortunately currently unavailable is the Traska GMT;

A deep black dial watch with domed crystal, a very attractive combination.

Well, I know that for some people black is just plain boring. But the funny thing is, I don’t find it boring at all. And I like the variant not for the sake of safety or versatility.

What do you think about black watches? Are they boring?

And as I look for a deep black watch dial for my next watch, share your recommendations!

Killer watch , black dials are classic

Black dials are the majority of my collection 😂.

Depends on your definition of deep black I guess tho...

Anyhoo here's some...

Absolutely not boring. I feel the same way. I have had to really limit myself or otherwise all my watches would be inky black. So far I've only got 2:

I guess my definition of deep black is the same as Jet Black. Rich black, preferably polished finish.

But anything black is almost always as mesmerizing. Your 2nd pic (Lorier) is awesome!

Both are pretty. I am tilted towards the SARB. Mesmerizing dial.

I got the same problem with watch dials. My wife’s tendency of seeing watches with similar dial as “the same watch” doesn’t help either 😂

Might work, hard to capture but it's definitely not matte black.

Well put, sometimes we can find beauty in the simplest of things

Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso, Original Omega Speedmaster Professional, among many other classics with a black dial.

Add gold accents and 🤌🏻🤌🏻🤌🏻.

Black dials tend to give the illusion of wearing smaller than they are, which is interesting and different (white dials have the opposite effect).

Of course, it is important to consider the components and finish of the dial.

Carbon fiber dials can exhibit a gray plastic appearance.

Also, black dials are less forgiving with respect to additional colors.

They are typically simpler and cleaner.

Probably the only ⌚ with a black dial that I own and from and from another lifetime.

Love it! The black and white colorway accentuates the racing styling of the watch 🏁

Actually it looks

I love how the polished steel on the hands and indices give the impression of silver and thus makes this watch suitable for anything from sporting to business to even black tie if need me.

My favorite watch design is a simple black dial, matte steel case and black leather band. Just love this combo.

I don’t actually have one atm. Bought one in Italy decades ago on my honeymoon, dropped it twice, it never recovered.

It’s the grail I seek but have not found yet. Millions of options but I have purchased one yet.

·

I love that one for the big date at 12! And the box sapphire is killer! One of the best designs tag has come out with in years imho.

·

Currently my only black dial watch is a North Flag. This guy just cleared customs and is on its way to Charleston!

The Seiko sarb033 I own is one of my favorite black dials. It's a style of my favorite type of black. It's a very dark deep "non black" color that appears black in almost 99% of lighting but in the right angle you notice it's actually dark brown!

Christopher Ward makes a fantatsic deep black dial

One watch came on the top of my head when you describe the watch you’re seeking; the bambino 38 with black dial. But of course there are infinite alternatives to this watch

This one does seem matte black/very dark grey to my eyes. Could be the lighting. Beautiful piece nevertheless! The yellow accent makes the dial pop

My hamilton jazzmaster also has the same characteristics. Very dark grey(ish)/brown, but not black just yet

It does look black even on screen! Liking your strap choice, complement the second hand very well

·

I love color and sometimes think the watch world can be a bit bland. However, black is a classic and some models look best in black.
