Transparency and honesty

About a year ago I was bored and scrolling watches on eBay. A dangerous combination. I came across an interesting vintage Seiko. The cushion case shape was different than anything I owned, it definitely had character, the dial was almost mesmerizing, and it could be had for less than what I spend a month in energy drinks! But there was a catch. It's shipped from India. A known hotspot for Feikos and Franken Seiko's.

I reasoned that if necessary, I could make up the difference by going without eating fast food for a month. With the risk to reward ratio squarely in my favor, I decided to throw caution to the wind and see what happened.

The purchasing transaction and shipping was unpleasant. The watch didn't ship for a couple of weeks. When I was informed it had shipped I wasn't provided any tracking. The seller was not interested in answering emails or questions and when he did there was a TALL language barrier. After a couple of months I assumed the worst. I knew going it that there was a 50/50 chance (or 70/30) that it was going to end poorly. I played the lottery and lost. I chocked it up to lesson learned and decided to forget about it.

Then... Without warning.... The clouds parted and the rays of sunshine pierced through, a chorus of Angels gently hummed as I opened my mailbox to find a package from India.

I rushed into the house to inspect my unexpected treasure and to assess it's authenticity.

Everything seemed cool. And that dial just shimmered. Just one small issue. I don't know my head from my a$$ about assessing authenticity. So I did the only thing I could think of. I asked WC.

With the help of the likes of @diniz.bortolotto , @SurferJohn , @Suddenly_Monday and @Whitesalmon I managed to fumble around and figure out that it was a 1975 Seiko DX 6106 7730. It appeared to be all original. Yes!!! Victory!!! It obviously needed a service, and the bracelet was complete sh#t, but it was running, keeping good time and seemed to be mostly in good shape. "Uhhhh.... not so fast big guy" my friendly neighborhood watchmaker says. Seems his spidey senses were tingling. The watch is indeed a Seiko DX but once he opened her up he found "significant" water damage. Not a big deal though. He could service it and have it tip top for the low low cost of 3 times what I paid for the watch. 🤬🤬🤬 Ugh.....

If you've read any of my other posts you probably know that I have a stubborn steak and far more determination than common sense. So I paid the Watchmaker and waited. A mere 4 months after I hit "BUY NOW" on eBay I picked up my Vintage Treasure ready to wear for the first time.

(I was wearing the Hamilton when I picked it up).

Now I come to the actual point of my post.

As sad and ridiculous as it sounds, I never really connected with the watch. It gets almost no wrist time and doesn't really spark any interest. So I've decided to sell it. But selling it brings a new dilemma.

As @iliketowatch pointed out on that post asking for help, if you get macro on that dial, the reason it shimmers is because it looks like someone took a Dremel to the dial.

While investigating I noticed that it was on a lot of the examples of this model. I found this one

on the interwebs, and decided in my mind that it was factory. Plus since I didn't care it didn't matter. But if I'm going to sell it, suddenly it matters a lot.

It runs great. It's only been worn a half dozen times since it was serviced. My watchmaker didn't say anything about the dial being messed with. But I didn't ask. I believe it's original. But like I alluded to before, I don't know f#@k all about authenticity verification. And I don't want to mislead anyone.

How do l phrase it when I post it to be transparent and honest? Does anyone know with certainty that the dial is or is not factory?

All that post for one little question at the end.

Last question should have been "Anyone wanna Seiko?"

It's a nice looking watch and from about 3-5 feet and more, no one would know the dial has been messed with.

As far as your reason for the post, sorry I can't help.

Leave it to me to miss a good opportunity.

"I have had the watch serviced recently, and though I haven't found other examples with this particular texture to the dial, it does appear to be genuine as far as I can tell"

Exactly what I was looking for! Thank you!

From my humble experience, bored + eBay + watch addiction is not a fun excursion for your bank account 🤣
