Would you be willing to pay above retail for a watch, whether new or used?

Maybe someone has asked this before but I'm relatively new here and curious on how willing are Crunchers to pay above listed retail price for a watch, and even how much above the original price e.g. 10%, 50% , etc.? Add your viewpoints in the comments! :)

Oh man, this is a tough one...i voted b, 'cause in the past i ve paid once or twice way over retail to get my paws on a watch (my grail one for example)

Thanks for being the first to comment!! I know what you mean... right now I am on the cusp of doing the same to get one of my grails.

I guess I'd be willing to pay up to 40% above former retail price for a Seiko Ginza Alpinist, but nowhere near the prices I'm seeing on Chrono24. For that money, there are plenty of other watches.

So far, only for the no date Longines Heritage Diver. Sadly (or happily), since the introduction of the 39mm version, the price of the legacy 42mm no date has plummeted. Not that the value is a concern but I could have saved a couple grand if I had only waited another year.

A gorgeous dial on that one for sure. However what peeves me is that it might be hit or miss with the accuracy of the 6R35 movement.

If it’s rare or no longer produced that’s kind of what you have to do especially if it’s no longer produced

·

Yes, if I can afford it & I want it I'll pay whatever.

·

I voted never. But thinking of it, there's a discontinued Hamilton that I can't find anywhere, only seen it once on the web(used-good contition) and it was about the retail price. Didn't pull the trigger, but I was really tempted. The Hamilton isn't that rare, or that expensive at retail, but maybe for a rarer, more tempting watch...

·

Sure, nothing wrong with it, if it's the only way you can get it.... did it myself twice

·

Since this is the only way I’ll be able to get a first-run Spinnaker 50 Phantoms, you can be sure I’ll be paying above retail for one 😂

·

I voted B but reflecting further I would pay above retail for a watch no longer available at regular MSRP but the watch would need to be new still mint from the manufacture. My original experience with vintage and pre owned did not work out well for me.

·

Weird question : if a model is no longer produced, you cannot buy it at retail.

·

I’d never pay more for something still on sale but for something out of production then yes if it was the watch I wanted.

·

This depends on the watch. A run of the mill, mass produced rolex? No, never.

A collectible and rare vintage/discontinued model? Likely have to.

On a lot of the Soviet watches I collect I’m willing to pay a little extra if it’s been serviced and/or is in really good condition.
