Captain Cook expiriences?

Hey guys, need an opinion:

Rado Captain Cook - I have no oportunity to try it out. I’m having trouble deciding between 37 and 42mm.

I have a King Seiko 36,5 mm which I would say looks ok on my wrist, but also have Orient Kano 44mm which also looks ok.

My wrist is 18,5 cm (7,3 inch).

People who own it or have freies it on or had it before - what would be your advice and is the watch worth the money?

(I found it new for 1850-1950€)

Tnx!

Can’t comment on the Rado but 7,3 wrist I would go for the 42mm

·

I have to say that Rado was the biggest hands-on disappointment for me ever since I’m into watches. It felt so flimsy and cheap, especially the bracelet - like a 50€ Seiko 5 bracelet. The head of the watch was a bit better but nowhere near it’s pricepoint.

I was always curious why I’ve never seen anyone wearing it in the wild, and as soon as I tried it on it was clear why.

Maybe it’s just me and I hope I don’t sound snobish, but I wouldn’t consider those watches even if they were in sub-500€ price range.

They are fantastic both, indeed a very tough choice! 37mm is definitely the spirit of the watch. I tried both sizes at the AD and thought the 42 just kind of got lost into the world of all the other 42’s out there. 18.5 wrist size too.

·

I concur with @fplourde. With a 7.3 inches of real estate you can afford the 42mm case. Not to mention you don't have to deal with butterfly clasp of the 37mm. Dive watch with a butterfly clasp. *Snort*

Big fan of Rado! I definitely like their look and I feel that the design is a little different than what is commonly seen and copied. I have a DiaStar and a Golden Horse. I plan on getting a Captain Cook at some point but I haven't decided which one.

I have a vintage Silver Horse and I am in love with it. The design language is a bit more old school, and isn't for everyone, but really speaks to me. I am Definitely going to be adding more Rados to my collection.

As for the size, go for the larger one. On your wrist that will work.

Having said that, I feel like the trend is going to be toward a slightly smaller look. But, again, on your wrist that shouldn't be an issue.

Interesting. Would like to hear more in detail why you feel this way and if other Rado owners concur

Golden Horse black was my favourite until a while ago, but I need one with 2024 manufacturing date, and that is almost impossible to find. But I did find it in Singapore and the end cost in Europe for me would be 2100€ which I find a bit too much for Golden Horse.

Maybe I buy it later used cause I saw it for 1300 used.

I need a 2024 production date cause I’m buying it to commemorate my kid being born later this year :)

Then I saw a 37mm diver which sounded really cool but heard it looks smaller on the wrist. So not sure if I would take 42 or 37

Yes the design leanguge is original and at first look I was a bit put off, but with time I’m fascinated.

Love the vintage spirit and originality.

But I have no experience with Rado as a brand, IDK if they are worth the money.

And I was thinking about BB54 Tudor 37mm diver but the price is a bit too much now that is why I started looking CC 37mm - but when I heard it wears smaller and that there is a 42 mm one (40 would be perfect I think) I’m a bit conflicted now :)

Personally I would go with the 42 and my wrist size is almost the same as yours. Definitely a lot of choices here. Have you considered a CW?

I have a 7" wrist the 42mm fits me well. Jomashop has the 42mm blue for $1703 in USD. Good luck on the hunt

I know but i need 2024 manufacturing date and for Europe you have to add 20% to that price

I just can’t get past owning a watch with the biggest expeditor of syphillis on the dial

·

I use to own the 37mm and it’s awesome but if you tend to sell/buy/trade watches… it was difficult to move.

It is not going to be sold ever

·

Compare lug length difference with what you already know suits you

Why did you get rid of it?

I was just never wearing it, I had quite a few watches then and I just never picked it out the box I don’t really know why, I do have a bit of seller’s remorse as it’s a great watch you won’t be disappointed if you get it

Watch this video by Just One More Watch where Jody tells you why not to buy it.

The most alarming line in the video for me was “He emailed Rado to tell them about the lume issue along with ither issues in his watch and their reply was (We are so sorry to hear this. Maybe you can purchase one from the latest collection)”

By the way I was considering one myself.

I find that the 42mm wears more like a 40mm. It also seems pretty slim so there’s no bulk to make it feel too big. My wrist is 17cm and it fits me perfectly. The complaints about the crown and bracelet are valid.

Image

I find the 37mm model to look and feel small. To be honest, I don’t care much for it. Access to the crown is worse on this one.

Image

The 37mm is currently in my rotation because my wife took the 42mm and traded me her 37mm to replace the slot in my case. This is on her 14cm wrist.

Image

Those sell for 1.1k second hand, check them out. I d go for 42 mm if I were you.

But i will have to try it.

And then when i pick the size then I have to compare it with Longines Spirit :)

I know but I need to buy a new watch from 2024 cause I’m getting a kid this year and the goal is to have a watch from the birth year

·

I had the 42mm in bronze.. Beautiful watch.. But I must admit I rather wanted the smaller one

I think it's harsh to say that they aren't good at a sub 500 price point, but I know what you mean. They photograph so well, and in person they are less than the mark.

I think the issue is the photography creates such a high expectation, that it doesn't deliver

Yes, but price is also problem and deceiving, in my opinion. You can buy unbelievable watches for that price, watches with no short-comings.

·

I have the 37mm limited edition. my one gripe is that the crown is too small! manually winding or adjusting time becomes a real pain in the ass.

·

I had a 42mm blue dial version on the beads of rice bracelet. I considered that the watch was spectacular when I got it. I thought it wore smaller than 42mm on my 165mm wrist.

However after a short time my feelings for it started to unravel. Although it looked great it kind of felt cheap and light. The BoR bracelet had no micro adjustment and I found it uncomfortable, the crown too small and more difficult than it needed to be to operate.

I sold the watch. I still look at the CC in jewellers windows though I consider it to be a great looking watch.

I have 4 divers all of which I prefer to the CC. Oris Aquis, Longines Hydroconquest, Mido ocean star and a Doxa sub 200.

Yes Captain Cook just has a ceramic bezel. There is a ceramic version but is 2x,3x the price

Yes and there is a totally ceramic CC also.
