Nobody is asking anyone to be a watch evangelist. You bought your friends a gift, you take a literal minute to show them how to wind it. You can do that in a bar despite the fact that is probably not the place I would hand over gifts like watches to my groomsmen.
Also, he's not their father. He's their friend, so you can take a minute to say "twist the crown on the side of the watch if it's not running". It's not hard. Don't be make hollow arguments man. None of the things you're suggesting is what I advocated for. You're just gate keeping watches
I see a lot of replies saying that if they are not watch snobs they won't know how a mechanical watch works and they will go caveman and think it's broken.
Guys, we need to stop being eletist about our watches. My son, who is a 10 year old boy, and can only pay attention to something if I explain it in Fortnite terms (ok, I am being an over dramatic old man here), knows how a mechanical watch works, and I took 2 minutes to show him stuff about it when I bought him his first watch.
These are your groomsmen. You will have time to talk to them. If you get them the watches, you can show them how to wind, store and set it. We are not special because we know how to turn the crown wheel to store energy in a mainspring. We are special because we know that's what the parts are called.
I so want to be angry at you, but I am just jealous. The Daytona is gorgeous, congrats! Also, congrats on getting one from an AD and paying retail instead of giving in to watch flippers
Display case back with an engraved rotor (you can have laser engraving done really cheaply) will be the best first watch they ever had. Imagine being mesmerized by the motion of your first mechanical watch, and then seeing your name and "the" date engraved on the rotor. No excuses to forget your friends anniversary next year...
And before I forget, congrats on the wedding, good luck and all the best bud.
