What do you think about patina on a bronze watch?

I bought the 60th Anniversary Bronze version of the seagull 1963 a couple months back. I have only worn it a few times. This is my first bronze watch and I am surprised how quickly the patina has set in on the bronze case. The crown has already darkened significantly and the bezel has also darkend in some areas. I am not too sure how I feel about it. I do like the bronze look in general but i prefer my watches to be clean and nice. I am almost thinking if i should sell this bronze version as i also have a regular seagull 1963. What do you guys think of bronze watches and patina in general? Do you like it or hate it? Does it give it more character? Or does it just make it look dirty and ugly?

It's really hard for me too! That darkening and greening crown is making me very uncomfortable. Haha! 😵‍💫

Lucky you! I touch my bronze watches almost every day even when I don’t wear them hoping my finger prints will advance the patina. The unique patina is the whole reason to own a bronze. I actually have one where the case is developing a nice patina but the crown is factory fresh copper color. I’m thinking about putting a drop of vinegar/salt on crown just to kick things off, or remove the protective coating that might be blocking the patina from developing.

·

I'd look to remove a layer of the patina on the crown. The rest looks fine to me.

·

Not tried one, still undecided if I really like it or really hate it 🤣

·

I love it and the patina is the reason I bought my bronzos. (Natural, not that science project stuff of nightmares)

Even tho my OCD would be screaming, only because it was new, I'd fight it because Patina on bronze is cool

I have said this before but I would shine it to a mirror finish (or blemish free if it was blrushed) and put a ceramic coating or something on it hahaha

Never purchased a brown watch; never will. Have a G-Shock with a custom 925 silver bezel. While it doesn’t tarnish to the degree of bronze, I hate having to clean it.

I love the patina on my bronze, but one of the best features is the bronze reset! My #ChristopherWard looks nearly new after a bath in lime juice or vinegar + baking soda. My #Tudor bronze takes an occasional bath in fizzy denture cleaner and gets back to about 75% of the new shine. Give it a try. It's like a haircut: if you don't like the look, it'll change back in a few weeks.

I don’t like patina of any sort. I’m thankful because it keeps me out of the bronze and vintage worlds.

The original Tudor bronze BB’s patina really nicely. Very dark.

My Bulova Tudor, patinas differently, not nearly as dark.

Different bronze formulations patina differently.

Patina on bronze is….

Yes I'm fighting my instinct as well and want to give the watch and the patina a chance.

Yes i will have to give the denture cleaner a try. It won't hurt the bronze in any way right? I also get nervous thinking of putting the watch in a bath.

It didn't hurt mine, but they are both dive watches. You can also just rub lime slices on it if it's not so water resistant.
