How do you stop yourself from buying watches?

Recently, I’ve developed the habit of purchasing watches. It’s gotten a bit out of control.

Might be good to share to the community how you deal with that urge.

I’m sure I’m not alone here 😌

Haha I’m the same, my wife literally drags me away from watch and jewelry shops when I say ‘I’m just popping over for a quick look’.

In all seriousness I deal with an urge by thinking of the next big purchase and saving for that, I would rather save up and get another watch I’ve always dreamed about, than spend little here and there on an urge.

We share the same name and same problem so I feel compelled to comment.

Limit your budget with some sort of watch fund, if you buy a watch at least you won't be overspending.

Buy a strap, if you feel that itch buy new straps instead to give watches that new watch look.

Watch meetups, sometimes seeing other people's watches scratches that itch.

Disconnect, buying watches won't bring us happiness, so we have to see them for what they truly are, just watches, get a hobby that doesn't cost much money or something to stay out of the constant watch bombardment of social media.

Make a list of the watches you want and then sit on it for say 3-6 months minimum. Interogate why you're leaning towards certain models and do your research that there isn't a better option out there for the money or for more money and that you should wait for. I find my interest waxes and wanes and if I wait long enough I find I'm not that bothered and can scratch more off my list. in the meantime, save save save and concentrate on the fact that new models are being released all the time and it's worth waiting for something you really want. I dropped money on a Hamilton Khaki Field Auto that I was so-so on because it fit a basic 'need' for me. A few months later Hamilton dropped the 38mm Murph that I adore. I now have a superfluous watch that I will likely gift or sell for a loss. The moral: know what you actually want and wait for it to avoid disappointment.

Just set some healthy limits and follow them...

I only buy watches that (1) look very good OR if I not plan to wear them often, must they even look truly delicious (2) cost max 290 euro (3) and if I want to wear them, must they naturally also have the functionality I need...

So I could NOT buy following beauty, who cost from 310 euro...

But I could just buy and order following amazing watches - who only cost 62, 30, 75 and 40 euro...

And a nice 34 euro box for them...

And five bracelets for 7 to 18 euro, to finally replace dumb leather and silicon straps...

But now will I probably not buy anything more the next 3 years!

Welcome to the full-blown horological habit!

If you find yourself looking online the afternoon after picking up a new watch, you are not alone.

I tend to preoccupy myself with research of whatever has taken my fancy. That sets me up for when I'm either ready to purchase, or have moved on to something else. It's a good way to testing if the watch in question is the real deal or a passing fancy.

If you get the chance to try the watch in question on, that's also a good way of testing the water.

If all else fails, buy a cheap watch to scratch the itch. I love my Casios as much as my more expensive pieces.

I find saying no works for me.

Spend more time working out and exercising which gives you less time looking at watches and more looking at your sexy or soon to be sexy bod!!

Well that’s what I do… hey you asked 😜

·

I'd rather not talk about it.🤯

·

Had to write a promissory note to her. One watch a year. But there's no price limit. However I will keep it at 1500.00.

I'm happy with one per year now.

Cheers!

Go to an authorized dealer and try some on. If the urge is too great, do so without bringing in your wallet.

Go home and think about it. This will slow you down.

·

I have the same issue !! sometimes I feel that I need to buy a watch during the day to calm down.

·

If I know I'm going somewhere where they sell watches I wear a really cool watch I already have. Of course my watches tend to be under 100 bucks and the selection at local big box stores tends not to be great to begin with.

But has it worked? Based on your posts, I think you need to up the sexy😜

In addition to what everyone has posted above....just try the watch on in person. For some reason I couldnt get the Hamilton Khakhi's out of my mind until I tried them two days ago. I still like them but I think I am not pulling the trigger anytime soon on these babies.

However, there might be downside to trying on watches....you may end up buying a couple!

It’s a working progress 😛

Most people want to start not buying watches tomorrow when they should focus on starting buying tomorrow and never getting around to it. If you can't procrastinate, you're trying too hard.

If one is a malcontent, just find fault in any watch. It's easy if you try. Set some really picky standards and be rigid with them. Lastly, focus on getting the bank balance up to some arbitrary point that's just out of reach.
