The GMT 'obsession' - is it real?

I don't know about anyone else, but I've always sensed a real obsession around GMT watches.

Yet, every time I've asked myself, "Should I get one too, and be part of this crowd?" I realise that I would never use that sort of watch functionality.

So it makes me wonder, am I really so different to the masses who obsess about GMTs or - and I wonder if this is the case - loads of people with GMTs don't really use the GMT function, either, but they just like the look and the vibe of GMT watches in general?

It's got me flummoxed. I have friends in other countries, and I travel, so I often think about other time zones... certainly as much as anyone else, I believe. If not more. But I'd just never track it with a GMT watch. Is that weird?

I guess I am one Of those people that just obsess over GMTs. In the beginning I thought it might be useful because I have friends in different time zones and I use it to track NYSE. I got myself the Casio A500 Worldtimer and noticed I actually use the feature quite a bit.

But Ive started to realise I just also love the look of a fourth contrasting Hand for example I find the Oris Big Crown Pointer date really gorgeous and it doesn’t have a GMT function.

So I guess the function might be secondary because to be honest I could just do that with my phone.
It’s just cool and adds some spice to the look

That's very much where my thinking is going, yes.

I know how you feel. I’m pretty new to the watch hobby, but for the last month I’m looking obsessively for a GMT watch that’s not crazy expensive.
Jumping from the Timex Q, to the Christopher Ward Sealander C63 GMT, to the Baltic Aquascaphe GMT, to the Tudor Black Bay GMT. And sometimes in between asking myself why a GMT watch actually? I’m barely leaving a timezone anyways. 😄

But to me it feels as if it’s a solid and important type of watch to have in a watch collection. Similar to a diver, chronograph, etc.

I am a GMT fan, however I need to care about 3 time zones on a daily basis (Germany, Thailand, New Zealand)

mind if I throw a suggestion into the ring? Consider the Farer Oxley GMT.
Ot really is a great watch for the price. I have had mine for 3 years now and never had a problem. Just throwing it out there!!

I used to travel quite a bit more than I do these days however I never lost my fascination with GMT's and try to keep on sort or another in the collection no matter how many iterations the collection goes through

·

I don't have a GMT but I am really drawn in by them. I feel like I have too many watches right now so buying a GMT would not be smart but those new Seiko GMT are tempting, likewise with the Lorier Hydra.

One GMT representation that I like a lot is that of the Bulgari GMT Chrono, where the second time zone is in a subdial. Maybe one day I will get it haha

·

I own a GMT, but I don't really use it, or like the look.

I find a 12 hour bezel does the job as well, and doesn't clutter the dial.

·

As someone who has three GMTs and is still looking at other watches with the complication, the answer is yes, the obsession is real.  Now that I'm used to it, I find that I really do miss the extra GMT hand if I'm wearing a watch without it.  I keep it set for home time and it helps keep me on track during the day, reminding me of how much of the day has gone by and how much is left.

I would recommend getting a traveler's/true GMT as opposed to an office GMT if you can swing it though.  I find the former type to be the more useful version of the complication.

·

I just like that GMTs come in different colour ways with the split bezel.  The actual 24 hour readability isn’t that good for me.

·

Well, if it makes you feel any better - I can hardly swim at all but I love dive watches.

·

I like the idea of a watch that allows the hour hand alone to be set independently--jumping hour--such as some of the Seiko Astron or Grand quartz models. But those new Seiko 5 GMTs look quite sweet (no jumping hour hand however).

·

Fifteen+ years ago, when I was on the road like a madman, and traveling much more.. yes, I would have been obsessed. Now, not so much.

·

The GMT obsession is real like any other feature you would like to have in your watch. It is fascinating function especially on an automatic watch.

I currently have 2 GMT watches and often wear it when I am traveling to keep track of home time. When I am not traveling, I set GMT to local time to function more like AM/PM function so I know when not to wind the watch.

If you are a watch collector, you should have one automatic GMT in your collection to appreciate its engineering.

I have friends in the military and some online friends that are scattered around the globe. Ever since i got my a Pagani design GMT November, it has been one of my most worn watches. It has been such a convenience game-changer for me. One thing that’s nice is that it is like a reminder to text a friend that i can’t just ignore. I have converted and I’m feelin’ the zeal!

Also, I just watched “Heaven Sent” the other day. One of the best episodes of television I’ve ever watched

A very different episode of Doctor Who - but a damn good one.

A friend introduced me to the show and I’ve enjoyed it quite a lot. I’ve really liked the occasional ones that kind of have a “Twillight Zone” feel to them. “Blink” was my first.

You might really like the 2008 episode, Midnight.

Media that plays with paranoia are often pretty good. But for that one, I got frustrated with how two-dimensional and annoying most of the characters were made to be. And the only character really willing to hear The Doctor out, the teenager, felt forced by the plot to turn on The Doctor. I felt it was a mishandled opportunity. Maybe it would have worked better with a reduced cast and/or increased run time, and characters thinking the situation through more.

Idk. It’s not implausible that there only be one rational person in such a situation—it certainly is not without historical precedent—but… again it just felt like it had a cartoonish pace to the paranoia. To quote The Queen, “It is not one I look back on with undiluted pleasure”.
