Talk me out of a Steinhart Ocean One Vintage

So, like it says on the tin, talk me out of this guys.

But on one condition - not with the same old, "it's a homage" stuff.

Yeah, I know it's a homage. But in my head I can differentiate between a homage to, say, a modern submariner you can buy at retail today and a homage to something like this, which hasn't been made since the mid 1950s.

So change my mind... is another brand doing an explorer style dial on a diver? That's the first thing that comes to mind. I know San Martin might do something similar, but the quality of the Steinhart would kick its butt.

There must be other reasons? Hit me!

Don’t buy it!
It’s not expensive enough, plus they forgot to put most of the info on the dial. Only 3 numbers? No water resistance rating or certification listings? Way too clean looking, plus quality is overrated anyway.

i'm here but i'm not here

Talk you out of it?  Why would I want to do that?!  Buy it already!

Believe me, I'm quite into the idea! So the logical question to ask, to my mind, is for people here to give me the flip side to the coin in terms of point of view, or see the alternatives. I may know of all the sub $1000 divers with explorer dials already, but someone may point me at one I've not seen before.

Just can't do it, I'm a sucker for that same watch!! Needs a different bracelet/strap. For some reason Gekota came to mind, they got a knock out beauty of a vintage looking  watch.

Get it! Get it today! The sooner you do, the sooner we get a wrist shot.

Looks good to me

Well, there's always this one:

But it seems to be out of stock on the websites I would usually go hunting for it on.  Plus, I would bet that the Steinhart is closer to what it is that you're after.

Talk him out, not insult him. Avoid these like the plague.

Ok - it’s a Steinhart, job done. The only sub $1000 divers you should consider are Vero if you want to be a hipster, Helson if you like skulls, Seestern Doxa 300T homage if you like to save cash and want colour, or a Squale 1521 if you want to spend $1000 bang on and actually have a diver of note with heritage from a company who can actually say they make proper divers.

Or buy a dive computer - you know if you actually want to go diving.

·

I don’t mind homages of stuff that isn’t made anymore. It’s gorgeous, you should buy it. 😄👌

This is an homage to a watch that Smiths did not make, by a company who doesn’t care about the Smiths heritage, and makes you jump through hoops to obtain. The owner is also well-known for his poor customer service.

This is not a Smiths watch - the history does not apply here.

·

Steinhart bezels can be stiff to the point of causing tissue damage when trying to turn them, they tend to have long L2L and very flat cases with zero down slope on the lugs.

But they are well made and fairly well priced.

·

It’s not - there is a lot of content in here about this. Smiths folded in 1979. Timefactors is not Smiths.

·

harder to get than a real ExplorerI, it sold out in 30 seconds last time the shop opened...

You can find it for 3x retail on ebay though!

·

I guess a couple of things; it's not a dive watch which is one of the two criteria (a dive watch WITH the explorer dial), and also the Smiths brand that's out there today is just some fella who's bought the name. It's not really "Smiths" Smiths which indeed, would be fun, if it was a proper vintage one.

San Martin after reading the end of that post...
